  • Breaking in shoes

Okay shoe-divas: what is the best way to break in a new pair of heels. I've started wearing them around the house and out to the mailbox (god, I look like a moron). Other suggestions?

I *think* Nordstrom has a service where they'll help you with spots that need to be stretched and/or softened. That would be a last resort, of course, but the option is at least there for you, since you bought the shoes there.

Wear them with socks. (In the privacy of your own home only, of course).

My mom always said to cook at least 3 meals while wearing them, and that after the third, they stretch out enough.
I have yet to put this to the test, as I am a messy cook and an incredible klutz.

The shoe stretch spray works great as well...you spray it on the areas that need stretching then you wear the shoes so it helps them to conform to your foot the way you need it to. Good luck and do ask one of the boys to photograph you getting the mail...I'm sure it's a Kodak moment!

it's not so much that they need stretched (they don't actually). I'm more worried about blisters / rubbing.

I hate heels. Have I mentioned that to anyone?

Ditto. I get terrible blisters either on the back of my heel or on my baby toe every time I wear heels. Shoes and I don't get along very well.

Put together the visual of walking to the mailbox in heels and wearing socks...

The last time I did this a school bus full of high school students was stopped, with what seemed like dozens of them piling out. Here I was sorting through mail, in ugly sweatpants and gorgeous peep-toes shoes (I was breaking them in for an opera date with DH)...I remember having to make a quick decision to "own" them while walking back into my house. It was horrifying...but I'm sure my appearance made some of the kids day. (That weird lady that lives down the street!)

But, it amused me to wear them as if, yes, I do indeed wear these daily...AND I even vacuum in them. (Upon enter house - ow, ow, ow!!)

Good luck, I ended up buying little plastic gel cushions that stick onto the shoes - I put them in the heels and toes. Then I also put padded bandaids on the trouble spots before they can rub. Everytime I try to break in the shoes, they just end up breaking me in on the big event.

Wear them around the house for a few days (and several hours each time) to figure out trouble spots. Then you can troubleshoot those directly. What also worked or me was to wear the new shoes over a slightly damp stocking. The moisture helps stretch the leather and form it to your foot.

I actually wore closed toe shoes to work last week during our 'cold snap' (it was upper 60s) and boy I felt it later.

I wear them so rarely though that I usually just grin and bare (bear?) and pain or discomfort.

Time to break out the winter birks!

I would be rocking in a corner sucking my thumb if I even got those babies strapped to my feet.

I'd need one of the lifts that we use in the group homes to life my arse up and keep me up.
