So now I am thinking of purchasing a tripod for our new SLR? Any recommendations? There seem to be SO many and huge price rage. Obviously we want to spend as little money as possible but I don't want one that is instable?

The gorillapods look interesting but I cannot tell if they are portable (shrink down/fold up?)

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

I wouldn't bother with the low end tripods, if you're really serious about this. Go with Gitzo or Manfrotto from the get-go, and you'll save yourself from a lot of aggravation (heavy and unstable crap tripods). And, to keep with the theme of this thread... Get yourself a good ball head.

I have a cheap one from Ritz camera. I only use it in the house to get photos of myself with the kids and every year on Christmas night to get a picture of us as a family. It does the job and I've had it two years. If you do get one for this type of purpose, get the remote for the camera as well. For the D40 it was only around $15.

Mine is a PlatinumPlus by Sunpak--I think it was around $40-$50. It's really stable and folds down, but I wouldn't exactly call it portable

What Alison said. I have a Manfrotto combo of 190XPROB legs (which I LOVE) and 486RC2 head (which is also very good, but not sure it's my "style"). I think it cannot be said enough that you should go and try different types of heads in a store to see what you like best. There's only so much you can gain from reading reviews.

Hmm, now that I re-read your question and I see you mentioned gorillapods, I'm not even sure you're looking for a full-size tripod. Feel free to ignore.
