  • Fashionistas: help needed with a weird skirt.....

    Hi guys --

As fall approaches (and we are installing our new closet system in our master bedroom suite!), I've been going through my clothes. I'm a fashion idiot, so they are mostly a disaster. I've been trying to bring it up a notch. Still, I have absolutely no skill in this area. Here's my problem of the day:

I have a beautiful dark camel-colored leather skirt. It is long, A-line - very classic looking. Not "leather skirt on a twenty something at a club". It's a quality leather too and very soft to the touch. I've kept the skirt because it is very flattering, comfortable and I inherited it from my mother. Every year, I think I will figure out how to wear it. I never do. I'd still like to keep it but I need to use it or lose it. It hits below the knee. I think it would look good with boots and a sweater - but what kind of boots (color) do you wear with a brown leather skirt? Regular shoes? Everything seems weird. I do better at picking things to go with it on top - but I tend to play it safe and pick a cream colored sweater or some such thing. Not sure what else to pair with it. I will try to find a picture of a similar skirt in a different fabric.

Any advice? It seems a shame to donate it. I'm sure some one with a better sense of fashion could figure it out.

Angie - can you post a pic of yourself in the skirt? Mostly to satisfy my inner voyeur.

I'm curious to see it too! I do not consider myself a fashionista by any means, but I'll chime in anyway. If you do a cream sweater I would do something bright to offset all of the neutrals. I tend to do this with a silk scarf or earrings. Just a thought. I have no idea on the boots though - don't donate the skirt, I bet it will be nice in the winter!

That's what I keep thinking. It is great for a winter climate. Still, I'm going on four winters here that I've held on to it and failed to wear it - except in my bedroom in front of the mirror.

Pattern neutral color tights or colored tights with suede shoes and a scarf to match said neutral sweater?? Can't picture the skirt - so I am not much help....like the blind leading the blind Best leave it for Vishenka or LSW.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

It's like this Michael Kors leather A-line skirt.jpg but in a medium brown tone. Darker than camel but not chocolate. Like oak. (I do wood tones better than fashion. )

Sounds really pretty. I'm thinking with boots the leather on leather may be a bit much. I'd probably wear it with pumps, maybe in a brighter color so you're not trying to match brown leathers. I have a burgundy patent kitten heel in mind. Add the cream sweater with understated jewelery -- now I really want this outfit. I'm curious what the fashoinistas say!

Yeah - the leather on leather thing is what bugs me about the boots. With this length and the winter feel, I wasn't sure what shoe you would do. I'm not sure pumps would work well on a snowy icy sidewalk but for indoors only, yes.

It's not as poofy. It's got a more graceful fall. It's a tad longer than I imagine the Kors skirt. It hits about 3 inches below my knee? It's not what I consider long but it's not knee length - not an awkward spot for a skirt to hit on me at least. Still, my leg/tights and shoe will be exposed.

You can do suede chocolate boots with a bright sweater on top. I'd treat the skirt color as a neutral and pair it with something patterned and/or bright. You can do virtually any color.

Is this close to the skirt color, http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/3111655?...55-2377666-1-1?

That IS the skirt color. Damn, you're good. Wouldn't brown boots look like too much brown?? I read a fashion column once in which they advised something similar -- not matching the browns when adding boots - but I can't picture it. Actually, I think I can picture it and it looks wrong to me!

Can you do heel? I'm thinking something along the lines of http://www.zappos.com/product/7698222/color/6 or http://www.zappos.com/taryn-by-taryn...hocolate-suede since you're planning on wearing the skirt in the winter.

I'm envisioning the top in jewel tones and form fitting:

                          http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category...9648/29648.jsp in deep shale
http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category...8624/28624.jsp in paradise blue or sour lemon

Thanks to you all. I will give it a go. I'm still suspicious of the chocolate boot with the brown skirt, but everyone can't be wrong! Hopefully, I'll manage to use the skirt this year and not have this conversation again next fall.
