  • Advice on TV Purchase

    Hi guys!
We're looking at something for our den - I'd like to get an LED or LCD, 1080p, 120Hz (for as cheap as possible).
We have found a really good deal for a Vizio (42") that I'm considering, but DH thinks we should spend more $$ and go for a Samsung.

What do you own? Do you like it?

We have a sharp but we got it because it was such an amazing deal. Otherwise we were looking at the vizios - we liked what we saw and heard good things.

I don't have advice on which brand to buy, but avoid Panasonic at all costs. Our 50" plasma flat screen looks awesome, but has been repaired 3 times in the 2 1/2 years we've owned it. Major repairs. Entire board replacements costing Panasonic around $1K each time.

Whatever you buy, definitely get the warranty. This is the ONLY time I would encourage buying an extended warranty because fixing the fuckers is ridiculously expensive.

We waited for superbowl and got a samsung and we love it. 42inches. Definitely check reviews because some companies seem to make tv's that die pretty quickly.

I've heard good things about Vizio--doesn't Sony make them? It's really a crapshoot as to who is really making what at this point with all the outsourcing.

We have Vizio and have been very happy with it. My parents have both Vizio and Samsung, and they like them both. If you have money to burn, I understand Samsung is the best. Otherwise, Vizio is also highly rated.

I'll second the recommendation for warranty. We love SquareTrade, and they recently started selling it at Costco for a really low price.

One more piece of advice: get a TV with as many HDMI ports as possible. You'll need them. Between TiVo, blu ray player, Wii, and XBox 360, we're one port short.

We have vizio and we really like it. Costco has great deals on them, best price we found.

Both of our TVs are Panasonic and we LOVE them. We have a 1080p, 42" and I think we found it on sale at Best Buy for about $500, which was a great deal. DH used to work in home theater at Best Buy so he thinks he knows a thing or two about TVs, and he thinks Panasonic has the best picture for the best price.

We have a vizio we got from SAMs almost two years ago and really like it. No complaints = I'm glas we went the cheaper route on this one.

I agree, Panasonic has a great pic! The one we have is probably just a lemon.

We have a larger Panasonic (I have no idea what size it is, what resolution or all of that) but its a great TV. We also have smaller Vizio that we also like very much. My biggest complaint about these flat TVs is the sound sucks! So whatever you get I suggest a set of speakers to go with it.

I got a great deal on a samsung earlier this year. It's been used like twice, but it was awesome both times. Haha

My BF also got a good deal on a samsung last month. He loves it. It is a pretty awesome tv. If he really wants a samsung, I'd just wait til you see a good deal.

My only advice on buying a TV is this: don't send my husband or you will end up with something twice the size and four times the price of whatever it is you decide upon.

We love our Panasonic plasma. One thing we found while researching is to think about your lighting. If you can avoid direct sunlight and make the room darker, plasma may have a better picture. If your room is lighter, you might want to go with LCD. I love that plasma has much darker blacks. My parents have an LCD, and sometimes theirs gets a weird 80s home-movie look to it. It might just be their settings, though.
