  • Intern Gift Suggestions

Any suggestions on what to buy a 27-year-old general surgery intern for his bday? (I would like to keep it between $100 and $150. No clothes or gift cards.)

He wants an iPad. That's not exactly in my budget. Haha.

My GS 27 year old intern loves...

    Home brewing kit for beer
A nice coffee pot that grind the beans an brew the coffee with one touch (preferably with the option to fill a thermos by itself). -- does that exist? I'm still searching for it!

I know I have more ideas (bc I've been brainstorming for Xmas), but I am blanking. I may add more to this later...

What are his hobbies or interests - not that he gets to do them very often?

He just bought a Keurig last week, otherwise the coffee maker would be perfect!

His main interest is sports. He's a huge Brewer and Badger fan. Tickets to a Badger game would be perfect...if he actually had a weekend off when they were playing at home!

He claims he wants to learn how to cook, but I've seen him turn on a stove twice. So I'm not sure how serious he is.

He's a pretty low-key guy. His ideal day off is sleeping in, watching football/baseball all day, taking a nap, eating, then going to a chill bar for a beer or two. He's not a gamer, but he's not outdoorsy. He works out occasionally, but isn't a big runner or anything like that. Gah, I spend so much time with the kid, yet I have no idea what he'd like!

Oh, and golf. He loves golf. Buuuut, somebody broke into his car when he was at an interview last year and stole his clubs. He's been borrowing his dad's set the couple times he's gone this year. So, he has to start from scratch, and I'm not sure anything I would get him would help.

We have kind of developed a tradition lately of doing little weekend trips as birthday presents. Usually they are "mystery" trips, so the recipient doesn't know where we're going. I like doing that because my husband is getting more impossible to shop for the longer I know him, haha. Of course, that requires a whole weekend off, which I'm sure is a precious commodity right now.

I got DH golf lessons once, as a kind of "all doctors should know how to golf" thing. He liked that, though he hasn't done much golfing since. (ETA: Just cross-posted with you on the golf thing! Never mind!) Cooking classes were actually a big hit (but he already liked to cook). He highly recommends a basic knife skills class if you want to go that route.

He also liked the remote control helicopter I bought him one year...

I think he would really like cooking lessons, I'm just worried about time. His next two months consist of: a week of nights, followed by a week of days, and so on. Then he is on nights the entire month of January. So I'm just not sure when he would fit them in!

A mini-vacation might work...We could even jut spend a night/day in a hotel near where we live. I could go to the spa and he could lie in bed watching football all day! Haha I will do some investigating into that! He doesn't let me drive though, so it wouldn't be a surprise. He claims I have road rage. Haha

I got my husband a certificate for a beer brewing class once. Because he has all of this crap in the garage to do it collecting dust. He hasn't taken the class yet, but he will sometime!

I just got him a little crystal clock with some dirt from fenway in it from the MLB website. Who would have thought dirt would be such a big hit! I've actually gotten a few really awesome things on clearence from the MLB online store around this time of year.

Ooh I'll check out the MLB site. Good idea! His obsession with the Brewers is borderline problematic. Haha

Something to tuck away for next year might be a subscription to MLB All Access. Audio and video of every game in the country from phone or computer. Both my DH and my dad love that.

That's a good idea if I can beat him to it! He subscribes every season, but a gift subscription would be a great idea. Never thought of that!

Chiming in really late but how about Online cooking lessons if he is really that interested in learning how to cook. Dh got me an online Top Chef University subscription. I think it is boring so far - a little too elementary for me but to someone starting out, they may find "how to stock your pantry" or "what are the knives you need" interesting. As soon as I can get through the fundamentals, I think that I will enjoy the cooking classes.

Thank you thank you thank you!!! Top chef university looks like a winner!! Okay, so I had to run it by him first because I didn't want to spend the money and then have him not do it. It's perfect! Top Chef is his favorite show, and he actually could fit it into his schedule. Right now, it's $100 for the year subscription, so it looks like he would be able to skip the lessons he thinks are boring. Love it!

Yay! One cool thing is the fact that you can "rewind" and "pause" when you want.
