  • Jeans - How Should They Fit?

I just noticed that we have at least a dozen threads here on jeans. I guess we like them. This may be an obvious question but I thought I'd pose it to our fashionistas since I just can't seem to get this right.

How should they fit? What should I look for in the fitting room? Is it really necessary to spend big bucks on jeans?

I wear jeans daily. I usually prefer a dark wash, boot cut jean. I'm petite 5'2" with a curvy figure. I almost always wear 2" heels though I wear canvas sneakers from time to time. Pre-pregnancy, I wore Lucky Brand. Sundowner jeans with super-high heels. They looked good at the start of the day but I didn't like that they loose their shape by the end of the day and cost $100. Now, Gap jeans are more in my price point and I've been wearing the Sexy Boot cut style. I weigh less than I did before either of my pregnancies but my middle is softer than before. I am constantly hiking up my jeans and by the end of the day they are seriously baggy in the rise. Am I wearing the wrong size? Wrong style? What should I be looking for? Do I really have to try on 700 pair to find new jeans?

It's the brand...gap blue jeans do that to everyone I've talked to...I love Not My Daughter's Blue Jeans (I'm clearly like 15 years older at heart). They're pricy (about $120), but I love them...

Yeah Gap jeans totally give everybody a saggy butt!

I prefer 7 for All Mankind and Joe's Jeans as perfect "everyday" jeans. They hold their shape much better than many other brands I've tried. They are pricier though. I'm a sucker for designer denim though. I really think the pricier brands are worth it. I do have 1 pair of Express skinny jeans that are okay, but I don't love them.
I'm just trying to make it out alive!

Re: saggy butt. Since I don't have much of a butt the sags are reeeeally noticeable after wearing the jeans for several hours. I have started buying jeans with substantial looking pockets (like pockets with a flap) to add some substance back there. I've noticed these jeans don't sag like my others. Skinny jeans also seem to look better on me even though I do not prefer them as much since I like the feel of looser jeans. I do have, have to, wear a belt always.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

Always buy jeans that are one size smaller, because they will stretch throughout the day.

I dated a guy after my divorce years ago that was a total metrosexual. He purchased me a size 6 jeans because he said mine were too baggy (I was wearing an 8). Never thought they would fit, but when I put them on, they were perfect! I never, ever would have tried them on my own, so I am thankful he helped me find awesome jeans. And I agree, designer jeans are worth the cost. They fit better and last longer (in my experience).

Try on all types of sizes and fits.
I always wear a belt, because I have no ass (really, none).

I wash in cold, and line dry.

My go-to pair are BKE's "Kate" style, boot cut. (Sold at the Buckle) :-O

MrsK, what exactly do you mean when you say that they're baggy in the rise?

My problem is that jeans that fit me in the hips and butt are invariably too loose in the thigh, and I don't even have skinny thighs! That might be a good look on a tall and lanky model, but it looks awful on my 5'2" self. Years ago I used to buy flared jeans (and the ones that fit best, believe it or not, were the London Jean from Victoria's Secret), but I'm not quite so fond of that look anymore.

I wish I could buy a size smaller, but I have since gained a bit of weight, and jeans that are too small end up cutting into my tummy. Not a good look. I also have an ancient pair of Aeropostale jeans that fit like a glove, but they're really worn out, and I don't even know where to start looking anymore.

The one pair of jeans I'm moderately pleased with is a Levi's 515 bootcut, but even that's not perfect. The waist is a bit higher than I'd like, and the spandex in the material still makes the jeans a tiny bit loose in the thigh area.

Now before anyone thinks that I want skin-tight jeans, I don't. I just don't think that a baggy behind is working for me. It makes me look frumpy and bigger than I really am. And what the heck, I'll post my measurements here. Waist: 25, Hips: 37.

I've found the fit really does vary brand to brand. I do really well with DKNY (thanks, little sister, for that find). So now that I know that, I stick with them!

Crabette, I guess I mean the jeans are falling off of me so that the crotch of the pants is actually several inches below my actual groin. Like I'm trying to immitate a penguin, perhaps? The rise just gets all stretched out. That and having to hike up the jeans is a bigger problem for me than baggy butt. I don't have much back there anyway. It's likely that I'm wearing a size (or 2?) Too big but I seem to have this problem with both sizes in my closet. But I don't think I could squeeze into a size smaller without major muffin top.

The muffin top is my biggest problem, too. My belly is just stretched out from the pregnancies, so unless I go tight enough (or tighten my belt enough), they don't stay up, so I'm pulling on them all day. But if they're tight enough to stay put, the fat/skin lumps around the waist. So I usually go that route, but then I have to wear looser shirts so it's not obvious, but most women's shirts just aren't loose enough through the waist.

HIGH RISE! I have a pair of cheap higher rise jeans from Urban Outfitters that I bought in Vegas this summer that go almost up to my belly button. While they look sort of trashy if i'm wearing too short of a top, they are so comfortable and no muffin top, it's all contained in the pant itself.

Hmm, that makes sense. Hadn't even considered high rise jeans!

I really like the way the Not Your Daughter's Jeans fit in the waist, but I wish their boot cut had a little more width to it....they seem more like a straight leg to me.
