  • Long Shirts?

I am slowly trying to figure out this whole "clothes" thing... I think I'm getting an idea about my shirt problem, though, and I could use some recommendations. Most shirts I find in regular stores seem too short. I feel like I'm tugging on the hem all the time, and it just doesn't look as flattering. The hem of most shirts falls right above the widest part of my hips, making them seem even wider. I have a few shirts that fall past that widest part (confession - one of them is a maternity shirt I can't part with), and they are much more comfortable, and I feel better wearing them. Is this wrong? If it's okay to wear longer shirts, where the heck do I find them? Is there a "big and tall" section that I'm missing? Plus sizes don't work. I wear an XL, but if I try to go up to the 1X, the proportions are all wrong (except the length is better). I'm not tall (5'4''), but I have a long torso and short legs.

I also have a long torso and short legs and like shirts from Aerie (they're part of the American Eagle brand) and Target. I picked up a few shirts at Target because they were on sale for $5. I like how they're cut longer and they're comfy

I don't know if it is in ur budget or not. But I always go to nordstroms and have all my button up altered. I can never find one off the shelf that fit. They r always to big in the wait but not big enough in the breast area and the sleeves are always all wrong.
The sales lady gets a bigger size then has the lady alter them down in all the right places I don't have very many of them but the ones I do have fit perfectly! It is truly amazing the difference.

Oh yeah, are we talking t-shirts here or button downs?

Oh I don't know, now that I go back and re-read. Oops. Well for button ups. Tailoring is the way to go.

I'm a little taller than you, but have the EXACT same problem with a long torso. I've found that I have to try on everything because shapes and sizes aren't consistent, even within the same store or brand. It's infuriating.

FWIW, most Old Navy knit tops are long enough and I tend to layer their tank tops or long-sleeved t-shirts (depending on the weather) under shirts that are a little shorter than I'd prefer. Rarely are the tops I find at Macy's long enough, though.

I also have a long torso. Finding great fitting shirts is such a PITA!!! I'm taller and have pretty small frame and (sadly) a pretty small bust so my suggedtions may not be great for you, but who knows.

I'm trying to remember where I've had the best luck...

Some jcrew tees and tanks are the perfect length. Splendid brand and vince tees are usually very long (and generally not inexpensive). I have pretty good luck with most yoga type clothing - so like a lululemon cool racerback or power y tank fit perfectly! I've had some luck with anthropologie too - but it is kind of hit or miss so ordering online is hard. I've found a few great fits at target - better luck with anything they label a tunic. Target usually sells out of the long tees/tunics pretty quickly - we aren't the only ones with this issue!

Oh and actually those 3 packs of kirkland brand tank tops from Costco are an amazing length on me. And so cheap! I've found that hold up pretty well too.

Btw - if and when you find a great fitting tee - buy 2 or 3 white and 2 black. Even stores like jcrew that have the same tees every year and season occasionally change the cut or fabric a little. Drives me nuts (I also destroy white tees. I have a way of spilling something every time I wear one).

H&M has a lot of basics that are really long. I used some as maternity shirts. I also like some of the "flowy" shirts TJ Maxx has (usually Willi Smith or Max Studio brands"

I have the same problem....I am taller, though....and busty, which uses up some of the material that could otherwise be used for length in a shirt. I agree about Old Navy, although things there can easily get too low-cut for me. Eddie Bauer has talls....I often get "tall" shirts/hoodies/sweaters to get the length I need. I just plain can't find button-up shirts that fit, although I guess I could investigate the tailoring thing. I am not at all skinny, but I am not as wide as plus-sized clothes assume, nor do I have broad shoulders.

Forgot to add that although I have a long torso, my arms (like my legs) are somewhat shorter than average, so buying talls works best with t-shirts, tanks, and 3/4 length sleeved shirts.

I have found good luck with Gap, of all places, for Ts and camis.
It doesn't hurt that we live close to an outlet, either... they are always on sale, already discounted because of the outlet store.

This is somewhat related to the fact that I'm still nursing but I wear my maternity tanks under everything even though I'm back to my old weight and general shape. Some of my shirts aren't long enough bc of my temporary nursing bust and the mat tanks always cover me so I don't have any gap between my shirt and whatever I'm wearing on the bottom. Brig super stretchy, you actually can't tell that there's even extra material because it looks like side ruching (although I never wear them alone) - anyway, just mentioning that as an option in a pinch.
