DH used a messenger bag all through residency, and has been carrying one daily through his 12.5 years as an attending. I think he'll definitely get use out of it.

I bought a Samsonite messenger bag for myself 12 years ago on the cheap from overstock (similar to this: http://www.overstock.com/Luggage-Bag...4/product.html) , and it's still going strong. I love that thing.

DH carries his Tumbuk2 bag every day for class. He always has his laptop, a book or two, coffee mug (love those OXO push-button mugs that never leak in his bag!), various personal effects, and sometimes the tablet as well. His bag still looks brand new after 2 years. He also uses it as his personal item on planes. They might be sporty and ubiquitous, but Timbuk2 bags do really last. He also has a Kenneth Cole Reaction leather messenger bag that's a bit smaller, and he uses that one when he doesn't need to carry as much. That one is probably 5 years old, and looking a bit worn, but it has held up nicely.

We have a medium size Timbuk2 bag as well - it was originally mine during grad school, but my husband took it over at some point. It's probably 5 years old now, and it looks as good as new. I carry this one now, and it's the greatest women's work tote bag ever: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004C54C5I/...cs_sce_3p_dp_1
