  • Paint sale at Sherwin Williams

40% off thru tomorrow. And you can buy white and have them add the tiny later if you can't select colors now. 30% of supplies too.

Now that we've lived here a year, I'm ready to get rid of the gray trim and white walls. We just bought $500 of paint for $335. Paint (esp no VOC) is so pricey! Happy to pay it off for a few months to stop looking at gray/white all the damn time! Yay nesting!

I'm going today to get the paint for the hallway, dining room, living room, and my master. (all the same color). My mom was getting on to me for planning to paint while pregnant, but if I get the low VOC stuff...

I spent $150 there yesterday! Got a gallon of paint for the nursery (pale yellow - had them match the bedding but cut it in half), a gallon of paint for baby's dresser (snowbound/white - although I think we need more so we can do another piece of furniture and the trim), a quart for our front door (dark brown - who paints a mahogany door white??), 6 cans of black spray paint for our kitchen chairs, 2 brushes, a roller, a paint holder, and a mask.

I posted in the Today thread too, but if you can't buy the paint this weekend and still want a discount, all you have to do is open an account (not credit - they just keep track of everything) at SW, and you always get 10% off.

ST - we painted with it yesterday, and it has almost no odor at all. My mom said she's never painting with anything else ever again.

Ah, sorry I missed it in the today thread! Just wanted to pass along the savings since I know some of us just moved into new homes.

Be careful buying white paint to have them tint later. Paint comes in different bases which they add pigments to make various colors. You might find that the white base you purchased can't be used to make even slightly deeper colors because it can only accept so much pigment. If you're only looking at using fairly light off-whites, you'll be fine, though.

The different bases contain varying amounts of titanium dioxide. It's that pigment that makes white paints really white and allows paints to cover well. The more titanium dioxide a coatings contains, the better it covers and the brighter the white. They take out this pigment to make the deeper and darker colors. That's part of the reason why darker and more vivid colors take more coats to cover.

The manager told us that they'd swap the bases if we wanted to tint it something darker. We specifically asked that although our house is dark so we're looking mostly lighter anyway.

Oh, good! I'm glad they mentioned it! See? That's why I always recommend stand-alone paint stores over the big box ones. They're so much better about giving out good info and really helping people.

And some of us have been living with builder-grade off-white for four years, are on a home decorating kick, and MIGHT be able to overcome the fear of commitment if the price is right.

Even better!! I hope you jumped in and get rid of the white if you want to!

We've lived with white accented with gray trim for a year and the baby nesting is motivating me!

Ugh, I still couldn't do it. I'll be in town again tomorrow though. I'm only brave enough to tackle the kids' rooms at this point, hoping that if DH sees the difference that he'll approve doing more of the house. (This is the guy who combined most of the various off-whites in the basement, pouring them into various cans "to consolidate", and who is perplexed and somewhat annoyed that anyone would ever use more than one shade of paint in a house -- "doesn't it make touch-ups so much easier if it's all the same?") But since I want serious color on their walls there are major decisions to make before I go to the store...

OK, shameless hijack. Here's the wall hanging in DD's room that's driving her color palette: http://pinterest.com/pin/173810866838352846/

She now has a great comforter from Kmart in the same colors, and a valance over her window that's turquoise with leaf green accents. Should her walls be baby blue or pale peachy-pink?

Inspire me? What did you get???

I admit - I had to laugh a bit at his logic! How old is DD? Old enough that she might have a color preference?

She's 4.5 and definitely opinionated. As we go through houzz.com and pinterest, she jumps and squeals at rooms with pops of deep pink, and at walls that are pale blue with white decals, and at walls that are pale pink...she loves the pink example in this article: http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/83392...for-Your-Walls

But I guess I worry that the wall hanging will blend into a pink wall and that the pink will be too tough to translate into a tween room as she grows. So I guess my mind is somewhat made up -- I had light blue bridesmaids dresses at my wedding, because I felt like blue sets off floral colors so well.

Either would look great! I had a blue room for a while when I was younger, while my twin sister's was pink. I know I painted it a sage green at some point again before I moved out, but sometime between age 9 and 18, we had pink and blue rooms. My sister just bought a house within the last year and painted several rooms various shades of pink, and I painted my apartment walls in grad school pink, figuring it would be my last chance ever to have my own pink room.

You could go crazy pink like A's room. I'm sure you've seen the pictures, she (and her friends) love it still and she's almost six but I suspect about this time next year she'll start to be over it.
