MIL bought DH a jacket from Banana Republic along the lines of what Pollyanna posted. YES! If I picked it out he would be skeptical, but he always likes what his mom buys. And I could care less because she has good taste. And a bigger budget. Perhaps it's time for this one to "disappear"

Yikes. Speaking of men's fashion. . . *gulp* I just dropped a small fortune on some clothes for DrK. He rarely purchases new clothes and he routinely wears clothes until they are frayed and threadbare. (So, if he likes what I got him, he'll be wearing it for a looooooong time.) I recently had to beg and bully him into parting with an ancient pair of pajama bottoms with elastic so worn out that they were constantly falling off. Imagine making pancakes for the boys with his pjs falling around his bottom. Not an appetizing sight. He has not replaced his winter coat in at least 10 years and I have a really hard time getting him to wear anything other than athletic clothes. If he had his way, he'd wear loud Hawaiian shirts for every dressy occasion. I figured that he's finished residency, he has a "real" job now, his parents sent him birthday money which was deposited in our joint account, so I'm gonna buy him some big boy clothes.

Now, someone please tell me whether my purchases were okay. Remember he's a big guy but not especially tall (Size 48-50 jacket, 18.5" collar, 41" waist, 6'1" tall). These are not easy measurements to work with. It's likely that these things will need alteration if they fit him at all.

I'm planning to give him a couple items for his birthday tomorrow and to save the rest for Hannukah.

          Charcoal Wool Top Coat: http://www.menswearhouse.com/mens-cl...02740000077314

Three Casual Dress Shirts -- not exactly these patterns but similar. He likes loud shirts and tends to be partial to pattern. He wears button down shirts w/o ties at work. No ties allowed when seeing psych patients:

That wool topcoat is totally classic, MrsK. I like it.

I like both the coat (I've got one very similar to that one) and the leather jacket. I'm not in love with the shirts, however, as they all have very busy patterns and I'm not much of a fan of that. On the other hand, if he goes for those kinds of patterns, go for it.

I know what you mean about the shirts. The ones I got are slightly less busy. One navy blue striped, one navy & white herringbone (which he will probably reject because he prefers larger patterns), and one brown plaid. He has the more classic white and muted blue dress shirts to wear with suits. When we go out, he'll walk up to the guy wearing the loudest shirt in the room -- the one with the Ed Hardy patterns or the one with a Hawaiian patterned shirt featuring Santa jet skiing, and he'll gush, "I love your shirt! I have to get one. Where did you get it?!" His current favorite is a bright green Irish rugby shirt; I've had to discourage him from wearing it for family portraits.

Also, McPants, what are your thoughts on slacks? He tends to prefer pleats because he has muscular thighs and they give him some extra space. I think they add weight and he wears his pants too loose but I cannot seem to talk him out of it.

No one should wear pleated pants. NO ONE. They add weight. I wonder if it is possible to find some that are a loose fit or athletic cut. Paging Diggity Dot - I think her dh has a similar issue...

Heh, I'm like 160 lbs; this is not an issue I have a great deal of experience of. I kind of thought pleated pants died in the early 90s though.

I hate when my DH buys pleated pants, and I am no fashionista. I call them "fat-front". He knows how I feel, but dresses for comfort primarily. I don't know which of us needs a fashion intervention more.

Tell me about it. Imagine trying to dress a 275lb retired rugby prop. I love the look of slim fitted suits but there's no way that's ever gonna happen. Of course he wants to wear Hawaiian shirts and Guyaberas. They have open collars and are straight cut so they are comfortable and not confining. Every time I get him straight leg jeans, he manages to split them. Since his physique is so different than mine and I have no clue what it's like to have boy parts, I've been deferring to him when it comes to men's slacks. Still, I have two sons and one is destined to be built like his dad so I need to get myself educated about men's attire.

Um, yeah -- wish I could help, but DH's weightlifting and small waist pretty much guarantee that he HAS to wear pleated slacks to fit both now. They just don't make 33"-34" waist pants with enough thigh room for him in flat-front slacks.

FWIW, Jos. A. Bank usually has the best options for DH. Dockers makes a style of slacks that has hidden elastic in the waist, which is great if you need some flexibility there.

His sizes are just dumb. I've gotten to the point where I order shit online and let him try them on at home and return whatever doesn't work. Jos. A. Bank has been the most consistent winner.

Dude is 6'3" and 230 lbs. Tailoring alone on a suit runs AT LEAST $100.

McPants - If you have any idea on brands that fit weirdly shaped dudes, I'm all ears. Here are his sizes:

                            Jacket - 48L
                            Collar -18"
                            Sleeve - 36/37
                            Pants - 33"x34" or 34"x34"
                            Shoes - 15

Yeah, I know -- good luck with that mess.

My DH is not a big guy BUT he does have junk in the trunk and large legs for his size 30 waist (I blame it on cycling). For casual pants, he wears Mountain Khakis. They have a gusseted crotch and ample room in the legs to make them comfortable. Best part is that he dresses them up and can also wear them for outdoor activities. They are pricey but last. The same with Bill's Khakis. He still wears a pair we bought back in medical school.

For dressier pants, he has had luck with JosA Banks. Although they always must be altered. We usually buy an extra pant for each suit. If you really want to get crazy, Barneys has beautiful suits that fit his crazy physique. I am not opposed to dropping that kind of cash on mens clothes because the styles do not change as much as women's fashion.

I've got nothing because my 10 year old won't wear anything but track pants. As in he cries if he has to wear something with a fly. It is a sensory issue I think. He's been like that since he was a baby.
