Our DVD/VCR died. I know nothing about technology. What should we replace it with?

Do you still need to play tapes? If yes, a blu-ray and VHS combo is around $150. If not, an ordinary blu-ray player goes for about $100. All blu-ray players are backward compatible with regular DVD so now is good time to upgrade.Comment

Yes, believe it or not, we still use vhs tapes. We got our first DVD player in 2008. We've gone through two since then so we we are not very good at this. Any particular brand hold up better than the rest? Is it a "get what you pay for" scenario? Are they supposed to be disposable? Seriously, just post a link and that's what I'll buy. We have a sony from costco. I think it's great, was super easy to set up. I think it was also about $80 on sale.
Not sure I've seen the VHS/blue ray combos at costco, but they do have some great sales. I think I actually saw ours on sake again this month or last..Comment

I would simplify and convert your VHS tapes to DVD, then buy a blu-ray player. The conversion could be a pain, but then you don't have to worry about getting an expensive device that will support VHS tapes anymore. These are the best sellers on Amazon:

Blu-Ray Player: $88.00
That's under $150, and the blu-ray player supports 3D blu-rays in case that technology takes off. It will also let you stream Netflix, Amazon Video, Pandora, etc.Laurie
