I don't color my hair because I know I can't afford the upkeep. Once I start getting gray though, that's gonna have to change. I usually only get my hair cut twice a year and I keep rolling the Groupon/Living Social dice hoping to find a winner. No luck so far. Ugh, maybe attendinghood will allow me to afford a good stylist.

Confession thread: stylist expenses.
I'm dreading the hair color phase of my life. Right now I spend $60 maybe 3 times a year for a cut and blowout (I actually only did it twice last year). I occasionally splurge on a blowout for a special occasion. But I spend a crap load of money and time on keeping my skin looking good already (I'm in my early 30's). So I kind of panic thinking about how much this will all cost once I have to start coloring my hair too.Last edited by JDAZ11; 10-09-2014, 02:30 PM.

I started greying when I was 18. My mom says 15.(thanks mom). So, I have been coloring or paying someone to color for decades. The problem with grey is that it is resistant to color or takes the color differently. Therefore, I now have to have a stylist mix colors and use different developers to make it work. My touch ups are just camo until I can get her to cover my roots. I dread the day I go grey. It will come because I do not want to be one of those wrinkled old ladies with dark hair. OR I have to go blond...I guess then I will finally look like my mom.
For what you describe, it sounds like your stylists is really putting some thought into your color and not just slapping on what she has. So, the $140 is spot on.Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

I'm surprised these cuts and colors are so much? I used to get mine done. The initial was around 150-200, but cut and color after was 30+10 tip. That was only touching up the roots though. Are these full head coloring every 8 weeks? Dang, the $40 once a month is a downright bargain.
Spotty, my hair was almost to my waist and I got annoyed with it one day and about 6" off myself. It was a little crooked for a few months before I finally went in. She patted my shoulder and said no worries, I'm fixing it.I've known her for years so she's given up on me.

Having lived in Cali, NYC, and now the PNW, I think geography has a lot to do with salon prices, too.

I totally agree with others - price seems on par but more so - you deserve it!! Unless it's breaking the bank, do it for yourself and don't think twice. You've more than earned it and everyone here can attest to everything you've likely sacrificed, put off, or went without due to the financial burden of OMGMEDICINE (that's how I'm going to convey the Esteemed Career That Everyone Is Misinformed About). If it looks good and makes you feel great, that's worth the price!
That said, I just got a $90 haircut (including tip) but I hadn't had one for nine months. I do plan to do some lowlights and coloring around my face and expect that to be $150-$175. No idea how often I'll be able to maintain it if at all. But I figured why not to celebrate my career move and raise!

I was going to a salon where I paid $180 (that included tip) for color, highlights, and cut. I found a friend from church who has a salon set up in her home. She only works two days a week, but color and cut come to $100 (that includes tip) and we have some great chats while she does my hair. 😀

I pay $105 + $20 tip for a partial highlights (and sometimes lowlights), a cut, and style. I go about every 3 months, although it's only been about 2 months and I really need to go again since it's shorter now and growing fast.Allison - professor; wife to a urology attending; mom to baby girl E (11/13), baby boy C (2/16), and a spoiled cat; knitter and hoarder of yarn; photographer

$35 cut at a salon. That's with my eyebrows.
When dd had lice (ugh!!!) last winter and we were all getting our heads checked, dh found some gray hair behind my left ear. Not bad for 37. When they start showing up more, on top, I'll go with highlights I think. I have a LOT of natural blond highlights already. Hoping to use that to my advantage.
I only get a hair cut about every 4-6 months.~shacked up with an ob/gyn~

I spend about $75-$90 (before tip) for cut and color every 6-8 weeks. Full foils with two different colors.
My issue is that I have a hard time finding a consistent stylist. I find someone, they do my hair a few times really well, and they get lazy or complacent and then stop doing such a good job.
I tip WELL, am pretty flexible, and consistent so I'd assume they'd want to keep me as a client. I don't understand the shitty QC. And it's rampant. Not just one salon or stylist.
