Okay now tell me about leap pads.

Nephew is 3... Do I have to buy games to go with it?

    What about a game boy?

I'm smiling. I don't know that Game Boy exists anymore. It's now Nintendo DS (same idea though). I think it depends. For my daughter who isn't really into video games, the Leap Pad is great. She's just figuring out what to do with a DS now, at age 5. The Leap Pad has songs, books, games, it's own App Store, etc. you probably do want to buy games to go with it. My son had known what to do with a DS from age 2 and would have been bored with a Leap Pad. So, if he knows what to do with a device, I'd go that route, otherwise a leap pad.

My kids love the Leap Pad. Games come in two formats - downloads or cartridges. Downloads are best, IMO, because you don't have to worry about them losing the cartridges, and they can switch games by themselves. When we got ours for DS's birthday, we opened it and pre-loaded it with some downloaded games before wrapping it. You will also want to get the battery charger. It was sold separately when we got ours.

Leap pad is awesome. My rule is no DS until they are able to read and read well. Btdt sitting there reading every little bit of dialog. One 6 hour flight and I was ready to just forget that ds on the plane lol.

My dd6 still plays her leap pad a lot. The games on it are better than apps you'd get on the iPad (learning apps) because they are longer and more involved and usually have several levels built into them. There are always good sales on games so don't buy one full price. The leappad app download cards are also on sale frequently. The battery charger is so so for us so we just use rechargeable AA batteries instead.
