Has anyone tried Bombfell? It's like Stitchfix for men. I persuaded DrK to sign up. We got our first box and I really liked everything though we had his sizes wrong. I've been very impressed with our stylist and how well she communicates with him (or rather, me, emailing on his behalf).

Tried it for DH. It was pretty awful. We cancelled immediately.

Define "awful". I'm clueless about men's clothing.

Well, quality was ok. Very trendy stuff or very basic stuff. Nothing with just a bit if style. Pegleg super skinny dress pants in a shiny fabric for a professional man. Stuff like that.

        Weird.

          I've never tried it.

I secretly love men's clothing. DH is a very well dressed man. My former life was in luxury retail merchandising, and he happens to be "sample sized." It also really works well that I understand men's clothing so I was able to snag some awesome deals for him. My favorite score to date was the black suit I bought him for our wedding. It was two months before the wedding and I was feeling pinched for money. The suit I wanted to buy him was $2000. Even with my employee discount I was looking at $1200. I went to the sample / mis-mates / cancelled special orders sale. I found the EXACT suit I wanted to buy him for $150.

Men's clothing is an investment. I'm not a crazy person, I know $2000+ on a suit is not affordable while you are in training. When you have the money, I recommend working with a professional sales person at a store such as Saks/Neimnan/Barneys/Nordstrom/etc. The store pays your sales person's salary, so you don't have to deal with paying extra for a personal shopper. I started my career as an assistant to a men's suit salesman. So yes, I am a little biased, but I think you will have a much better experience even if you have a budget or want things on sale. If you need a referral, let me know!

Reading your post made me salivate! DrK falls into the big & tall category and it's so hard to dress him. And I'm truly clueless. We haven't had much success with department store sales staff. The big/tall thing throws them off and DrK ends up leaving the store feeling depressed. Educate me!

No one wants to leave a store feeling depressed, so my heartbreaks to read that DrK has experienced this. Big / Tall is a challenge. Is his jacket size greater than US 50 / European 60? Are his common problems that the sleeves are too short / if they are the right length then the shoulders are too big / if the shoulders fit then the back might be too high etc. ? Waist fits in the pants, but not in the seat? Length too short?

It sounds like off-the-rack isn't working and the sales staff that you have encountered is not knowledgeable about tailoring. If he buys a garment with any of the common problems listed above, I assume that the alterations charges to correct the issues of the off-the-rack item are almost equal to the price of the clothing. Made-to-measure is going to give him the best fit. The garment is being made to fit him and the establishment is going to keep fixing the item until it is perfect.

Where should you go? Perhaps you have a local shop that specializes in this very thing. I don't really have an idea of how much something locally will cost.

If you want to go with a luxury retailer, good news is that this is March, and it's made-to-measure month. Did someone say trunk show discount? Yes, please. Discounts are are around 15%. Even with the discount, this is not an inexpensive route by any means. I see your location shows that you are in the Midwest. If Chicago is a possibility for you, I can provide more specific recommendations.

He is usually a US52 in a jacket and about a 42 waist. His neck is 18.5-19". His shoulders and upper arms are hard to fit. Jackets and shirts often have arm holes that are cut too high even if they fit across his shoulders and neck. Shirts that fit his neck, billow around the waist but "athletic cut" are often too tapered. He's 6' so not quite tall enough to wear Tall shirts but regular shirts are often too short because they pull up at the shoulders. Likewise, pants are a hard fit because he has muscular thighs and then the pants frequently slip down. (He was a former rugby prop. This article explains the build, though DrK would probably fall into the heavy anchor category described therein http://community.tribesports.com/gui...or-different-r) We've had experiences where we go to men's stores and they are better able to fit short men who are very overweight, as wide as they are tall, than they are able to fit DrK. We had luck with an on-line made to measure company in the past but so expensive and occasionally at big/tall shops. I've also bought larger shirts for him and had them cut down.

                Unfortunately, not in Chicago.

He sounds like he's built so much like my DH. We'll be going back to Chagrin Falls any time he needs new dress clothes. Peter's in CF has done a much better job at outfitting him than Nordstrom (who still did pretty well) or any other men's store. Finding a great men's store with a great tailor is his best bet, just challenging.

MrsK I don't know how they are with Big & Tall but DH LOVES Byron on the Plaza - that is his go to shop right now.

ETA: I know several of the Chiefs shop there so I'm sure they are good with all sizes.

                      When is it?

Hijack…husband is not a fan of fashion and has little need of professional businesswear. (Despite his high rank in the hospital administration these days, he can get by just fine with casual slacks and a shirt and tie.) But, he *is* going to a wedding in September that should be quite fancy, and his residency interview suit is 10 years old and never fit particularly well. If he needs a suit, what should our pricepoint be for something that won't stick out like a sore thumb, but also won't be an exorbitant investment given it will have only a handful of wearings over the course of the next 10 years? If I have a budget and a motive I might be able to drag him to Nordstrom to get something bought.

(We're a post-training family with buckets of disposable income, but saving money is a huge priority and dressing well is, like, a negative priority. We would almost rather be eccentrically ill-dressed than wearing the best of everything, LOL.)

I choked at the $2k price tag too. I mean 90% of my wardrobe is purchased at thrift stores.

Well, my DH does have several occasions to wear a suit - conference speaking, meeting with politicians, etc, and there's no way a $2,000 suit is entering his closet. What happens when he spills his lunch on it? But, he does feel much more comfortable being in a nice suit that fits well.

DH is up to about five suits now, they've all come from the same place - he spends about $800 each, about $600 for sports coats. One he has had since he interviewed for residency more then 10 years ago. They last and they fit.

Has he tried Brooks Brothers? I think they can do some custom sizing. We got DHs interview suit there during a sale weekend. It looks amazing.
