Fall coat recommendations?

Ok y'all, I need a fall coat that isn't my black windproof shapeless thing.

I am petite/slight on top so it can't be too big and I get cold easily. I'm not opposed to some length but can't be fussy bc I need to be able to wear/hold/pick up kids in it.

Any recommendations for something practical and warm yet stylish?

I finally splurged on this north face and I love it. It has a really nice flattering shape. Hardly gotten to wear it here yet though!

^^No preference. But I live in the South. It never gets below 20 ever and 40 is the average daytime high in the coldest months.

But even that just reads like sporty to me and I feel like I have that covered because that's how I've dressed for the last decade. I need like "casual adult but could be dressy because it's also cute but isn't also too sporty"

Hm. A search for fall coats brings up a LOT of trenchcoats. Not sure exactly what you mean by "can't be fussy", but these kinda stood out, to me; no idea if they'd be too long on you?

I like the second coat Poky posted a lot. I feel like it's hard to find a coat that's not sporty but is easy to pick up kids in. I have a handful of nicer wool coats, but I always end up in my Patagonia jacket when I'm with the boys because it's just easier.

Also, fwiw, I've had a lot of Modcloth coats over the years and the buttons have almost always come off after a few months.

My first thought was trench coat, too, but since she said she gets cold easily, and doesn't want anything fussy (most trenches are buttons)... Maybe something well lined or wind proof that zips up and covers the chest/neck?

I think I basically need a trench shaped Patagonia type/windproof jacket. (Which isn't a thing).

I love the cut of a trench if it's on the shorter side since I'm short. The second one poky pinned is adorable but doesn't seem warm enough for fall/winter playground supervising.

I have a lightweight Arc'teryx down that I can wear in 50 degree weather but still warm enough for some of the harshest winter conditions. As opposed to my North Face down which is so heavy duty I only wear in <10 degree weather. This looks perfect for the type of winters you have.

Arc'teryx runs slim if you opt with them.


The only thing I regret with my coats is not opting for mid thigh or calf length. Both of mine are waist length. If the next place we move has harsh winters I'll invest in a longer coat. Until then I bought a large shell from Target and am going to try layering.
