Food. I believe eating should be an experience not just sustenance. OH-and Travel because it affords me new food experiences.

Groceries. I buy good craft beer, and often treat the kids with their favorite snacks regardless of sales, and I can get carried away at the farmer's market. About 90% of our red meat and 50% of our fish is local (and therefore $$).

And educational materials for the kids. In fact there's a math book I want that's coming out in a few weeks, and as soon as it's available I'm going to buy it, along with two others, and drop at least $100 with the publisher.

Probably beauty stuff. Hair ($$$), waxing, makeup, ipsy subscription... it adds up fast.

Travel. I still try and keep it as cheap as possible, but we have done way more than most in-training families

I spend cash on food for convenience. Everything else is pretty cheaply gained: I shop exclusively at Ross and TJMaxx, with the occasional Amazon shirt. Groceries at Trader Joe's and Costco. Car is paid for, and isn't a luxury vehicle.

What do you splurge on?

Rehab (nothing covered by insurance), babysitters, and I think I splurge on toys - but I'm certainly not as bad as many people.


I used to splurge on group workouts and beauty related items/treatments. I feel like I don't have time to know where to go or what's good any more, so those days are over. Workouts - I just don't want to risk doing anything stupid. So no group fitness.

Coffee. I buy a cup a day when I'm on campus. Comes out to about $7 - $10/wk, I think. It's such a nice way to relax and a great excuse to take a walk. Worth it.

Otherwise we tend to spend more on food. We host a lot of potlucks, go out to dinner with the med school crew pretty regularly, and love the handmade pan crust at Domino's.

We are pretty cheap in general but I am usually willing to splurge on food and experiences.

I have started splurging on clothes which means moving up from Target or Costco to Nordstrom sales. We don't even have a GAP in this town. Migraines=Botox I am trying it out. Pets. We added two dogs and a horse to our family in the last 14 months.

It use to be Fabric and Cloth Diapers for the longest time. Now it's a little more on the fabric side because I love to sew and no cloth diapers but ever since I came to Ca my mom offered to pay for housekeeping every 2 weeks and I think I'll keep that and splurge on that. When I get back home, I'll probably splurge on Starbucks a little more when I'm out

Homeschool stuff (I know that sounds insane but Montessori is expensive and I like all the pretty materials!), books for the kids. Sometimes kids clothes - I usually get them on sale but they don't need this MANY, that's for darn sure.

Anything for DH is usually top of the line. He grew up without almost anything new, ever. And he has few hobbies now because he has no time. So the few that he does do, I really like to get him nice stuff (scuba, fishing, cooking). The irony is that he wouldn't spend anything on himself but I'm the one who consistently blows our "spending limit" at birthdays/holidays.
