What do you splurge on?

We splurge on travel, like [MENTION=1889]SoonerTexan[/MENTION] said we did a lot throughout training and that certainly hasn't changed now that we are done. We hired a lawn service and now I'll often hire a handyman on projects DH used to do. Other than eating out often, we are generally pretty frugal in most other categories.

Travel at least once a year
Housekeeper once a month

I'm curious for all of you who have housekeepers, what exactly do you have them do and how much do you typically pay? Having a housekeeper has been on my list for some time now, but I always feel so ashamed at people seeing my house when it's in disarray, so I could see myself scrambling to tidy up prior to the housekeeper coming which of course defeats the purpose.

I keep my house "picked up" and do the day to day maintenance. The housekeepers do the heavy lifting; through mopping, dusting ceiling fans, blinds, and light fixtures, changing linens, scrubbing showers and bathtubs. I hit those spots in between their visits as needed but, generally, what it takes to keep the kitchen sanitary, stay on top of laundry, and pick up after the kids keeps me so busy that I probably wouldn't find time to mop the bathroom floor on a regular basis.

Also, hubby does zero house work; he rarely even takes his dishes to the sink and leaves actual trash everywhere (I mean, empty containers, used tissues, gum wrappers). When he was a bachelor, there were mice living among the clutter. On the other hand, I'm a compulsive neat freak; I'm constantly picking up his mess which is truly an endless job. So, the housekeeping saves our marrage and prevents me from commiting murder.

It's like having a reset button. For just one morning, the house is spotless and I can breathe.

Oh, and I do tidy before the housekeepers come. They can't clean if there's too much clutter. So I make sure the dishes are done, laundry off the floor, that there are clean linens, and counter tops are clear. I make the kids put the legos away and tidy too. (So the housekeeper won't vacuum up their toys.) If the toilets look really bad, I'll swipe them with a chlorox wipe before the housekeeping arrives. I don't pay them enough to clean up after all the times my boys miss.

Oh - you have to pick up first. You pick up. They actually clean. Scrub bathrooms, mop floors.

Right now we have full blown housekeepers. It's actually kind of awful. They "pick up" before I have a chance to - it doesn't work. Only you can put things where you want. Anyone can scrub your bathtub.

I also pick up before mine comes - that means my kids rooms are still a mess after they leave but the floors are clean, beds made and most importantly toilets scrubbed (boys! yuck!).

Our splurge is definitely travel - getting DH as far away from the hospital for a full week 3-4 times/year is key!

Travel -- so DH can unplug and we can all get some QT
Hair -- mine of course. Cut and color roughly every 6 weeks
Exercise -- I do kickboxing and pilates. I really enjoy both.
Clothes -- occasionally I splurge on wardrobe pieces for life. Paul Green booties were my latest post election retail therapy purchase. They are yummy!

In my life I've been frugal to a fault. It's only within the last 18 months that I can get excited for small purchases.

See, having someone just vacuum and mop my floors would be worth it for me! DH is in charge of that chore right now and it never happens as frequently as I would prefer.

Considering that I used to splurge on facials and Victoria's Secret, housekeeping doesn't sound that frivolous.

I'd also say I splurge on my thrift shopping. Most of the time, the indulgence is nominal but every once in a while, I find something fabulous that I must have. Usually something like a vintage fur or a piece of furniture or art. I usually have enough saved up for it and the purchase is well worth it.
