  • The Party!

Well, we received an invite a month ago for a "Class of 2001" get-to-know you party...Thomas didn't RSVP because he didn't want to "hang out" with docs on his days off and I was feeling pretty ticked about it because they were offering free childcare for the evening!!!!!!!! Anyway, Thursday the hospital called me and said "we won't take no for an answer, you are coming. Your babysitter will be at your home at 5.45pm-midnight tomorrow!" hehehehe...I was so excited.

The party was at someone's home in the country here, and it was really nice....There was a nice meal and everyone was really friendly. We had a great time...and they provided us with a gift bag full of gift certificates ($100 gift certificate for a jewelry store!!! (Thomas thinks HE is getting a watch...HA!) ) etc, etc...It was really neat!

I found only one thing discouraging...the spouses were virtually ignored....There were about 8 new docs starting and they had them all stand up and introduce themselves to the small group of new people....while the spouses all sat there next to them. The purpose of the party was for the new people to all get to know each other to make the transition smoother...but all of the docs already knew each other!! At the end of the whole big spiel I raised my hand and asked if we could pass a list around for the new spouses to sign and put their numbers so that we might all get together....this was received well by the spouses but the medical director looked totally shocked...."uuuuhh...sure, ok"

It just seems unusual to me.... It would be nice to be eventually treated as my spouses equal....not his tag-along!

At any rate, it was a great party and we were both glad that we went...but here is the real clincher....

We left and it was SNOWING!!!! SNOWING, I tell you...the flakes were HUGE and were coming so fast that you could barely see.....we were out in the country and as we got into town it slowed down and eventually stopped...but ...It was OCTOBER 5 and their was SNOW!!! BRRRRRRRRRR!!!

    Kris,

I'm so glad you had a night out. I'm sorry about the way the spouses were treated. Maybe you are just the one that community needs to turn things around.

SNOW - I don't think I'll complain this weekend about the 35 we are supposed to drop to tonight.

      Kris-

Don't you just want to choke them when they neglect to tell you about stuff like that party?! That is exactly like something Dave would do-- or he'd mention it is passing with the obvious "I REALLY don't want to go" tone to his voice. I don't think they get how hard to can be to be on the spouse end of this with no other local medical spouse support. Not to be whiny, of course. It's just a conversation we've had recently after he didn't tell me about a party that was going on here because everyone told him the people hosting the party were weird! Granted, it was two single female med students and we probably would've been the only married people, but I still would've like to have known about it!

I'm glad the party went well. Was the medical director married? I'm thinking probably not! Good for you for speaking up and making an effort to get to know other people! I know that isn't always easy for you-- or any of us for that matter!

As for the snow-- I was just watching the weather channel. I don't think it's more than about a 100 miles north of here. Where the heck have I moved that it snows in October? It's 29 degrees this morning with a wind chill of 16. Oh my goodness!

Well, again, my mom reminded me that spouses in all professions are generally treated this way.....so I guess I can't complain too much. I hate to disappoint you, Luanne, but I'm not the person to "lead" the pack here I think I'm the most socially akward person on the planet I have spend the last two days combing every comment I made, etc and berating myself...I'd like to disappear now!!

I couldn't believe the snow!!!!!!! I hear that they are expecting an especially cold winter all throughout the country this year....does anyone her live in the south? We are going to start booking our vacations to see you now!!!
