  • Financial aid question...

I am just wondering...all of my student loans came out of deferment last week.....but I don't graduate until december....aren't we supposed to get something like 6 months after graduation before we have to start paying back?

I need to call them....but I just want to make sure that I'm not wrong about this.

    Kris,

I got 6-9 months automatic deferment on my student loans, provided that I was attending school at least 9 hours a semester. I don't know if the amount of credit hours that you are enrolled for will keep you in deferment status. Call and ask about all your options. STUDENT LOANS SUCK!!!!

Well, I just got the paperwork on the deferment, and I am in utter shock!!!! In order to have a reduced payment arrangement made ie. interest only or graduated payments, they are requiring verification of income. Thomas didn't apply for my loans, nor did he vouch for me in any way..but because we're married.....his income counts. They don't care about our other debts, physician loans, etc, etc....

I'm beginning to understand why people default .....I think I need to call them!!!

        Kris-

I got a 6 month deferrment on my student loan- and because it's based on the interest rates- my payments have been going down, down, down. I have them take it monthly from our checking account (for another .25% off). And you and Thomas don't have separate credit. Once you're married you 'get' all of each other's baggage, including past spending habits. That's why I wasn't sure what you meant about him having to keep his credit clean while yours suffered. Banks will look at both of you- together as one big package- forever. (and it continues whether or not you're married. My aunt stillhas to deal with decisions she made when married- and she's been divorced for quite a while now!)
