Hello all. My husband is finishing his indentured servitude [general surgery residency] this June, and we are hoping to relocate back to New England [closer to our family and free babysitting!!]. Is there anyone out there from Portland, ME? Do you know of any openings/opportunities for general surgeons? This town appeals to us because of it's culture, lifestyle, and proximity to both sets of grandparents.
    Much appreciated!

Welcome Nancy and congrats on seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I think we have some Mainers out there.

I don't have any specific info here...just chiming in to say hi!

My grandparents have owned a cottage at Long Sands York Main -- forever basically. I love Maine but the only opportunities when we finished were in RURUAL Maine. Wow, that was an eye -opener!

I think the best way to network is to send a letter, have any attendings who have connections to that locations CALL for you, and keep a lookout on all the websites. We found that many jobs were not posted so a letter to say "hi, I am very qualified and love your program/area" really prompted the powers that be to contact us. They may even taylor the job they were thinking of posting to your spouse.

      Just my two cents. Welcome!

        Thanks

        Thanks for your reply, Flynn
Doesn't Maine get under your skin? We have seen the rural postings as well, and cringed like it sounds like you did!
Congratulations on finishing the marathon residency! Wow.
We have kids 4 and 2 as well, thanks to the 2 lab years. : )
Just curious, where did you end up? Close enough for summer weekends at the G'rents cottage, I hope.

Hey lady! Nice of you to pop back in!!

To everyone else - Nancy is my friend IRL. If anyone has any contacts, she & her husband are completely worthy of a PM.

I still think they should be investigating jobs in Kansas City though.

I lived in Maine for a while and loved it. I don't know if this is true for medicine but in general wages in Portland, Maine are much, much lower than other small cities. I would be suprised if doc jobs paid particularly well unless you get close to the Canada border. Maine is one of the two poorest states in the nation and they have a huge amount of uninsured people. All this said, I am sure you can live well on what a general surgeon would make and its a beautiful place.
