  • appropriate memorials?

When my Dad died from leukemia, donations to the American Cancer Soceity in his name was actually what I asked for in lieu of flowers. There were still probably 25 plants and flowers at the funeral, but I also received several cards from the ACS saying that a donation had been made. It made me feel good to know that even though the flowers were very beautiful, some of the money that was spent went to a greater good-- someone else's Dad potentially wasn't going to die from this awful disease.

Just my personal experience with it.

My good friend lost her beloved grandfather to prostate cancer Saturday morning. I want to do something for her, but I hate to send flowers. Does anyone have a suggestion of something else that I send that would be appropriate?

How about a donation to the American Cancer Society in his name.

How sad for her. I also think a donation to the American Cancer Society would be a nice gift....but if you know her very well, you could write her a touching poem or heartfelt letter....those things can seem so much at a time like this!

Thanks for the great suggestion, I think that I will make a donation to the American Cancer Society.

It seems as if focusing on charity helps the living cope with death better. My best friend's involvement with Brain Cancer research has helped her to celebrate the life, as opposed to the untimely death, of her mother. It helped her to further the healing process. Maybe I will gently suggest this to my friend.
