  • Queston for Michelle, for real

So I bought three laying hens, Dominique breed, a month ago. The man I bought them from told me they were less than a year old. There was an egg in the cage when I bought them, and the first week after I got them I got two eggs. Since then, nada, not even one egg. I am getting worried. I know the days are short and bc it is cold that affects their laying ability. But the chickens I had before still laid a few eggs a week in the dead of winter. Should I be worried? Cause I am worried. Is there anything I can do? I already put three golf balls in their nest. I feed them laying feed and kitchen scraps. Thank you!

From a fellow farmer (really I am, it was my high school mascot), did the guy you bought them from have artificial light or a heat source in his coops? My northern latitude means even shorter days than yours and I haven't seen an egg for at least 2 or 3 months. Do you add any oyster shell or other calcium source? I've had some problems with that if I forget to add it.

Pretty birds! What color eggs do (did?) they lay?

I was going to post "Ask Nellie."

I don't know much at all about chickens. Sorry! I can't even think of a classmate to call...
