  • shedding my Martha Stewart comparisons..

We're actually having company this weekend. In almost two years of living here, this will be the second time that we have invited people over. I never invite people over because entertaining just seems like a lot of energy and money, two precious resources that are somewhat lacking right now. Needless to say, this hasn't helped us to build a sense of community here. I finally invited another couple in my dh's program and their two year old over for Saturday night and I plan to have pizza delivered. I'm sure that I'll clean like a tasmanian devil for about an hour, but then I'll just have to let it go.

The irony here is that I don't ever notice if someone mopped their floor and I don't care if they don't even offer me a glass of water. Why must I impose these standards on myself? Do you guys feel this way too?

Yep, I feel pretty self-conscious about the way my house looks when I have guests over - I think it is some in-born "clean cave" instinct or something.

Whenever my dw's nerves are frayed for no apparent reason, it is usually means company's coming soon. She's a great hostess, but heaven help you if you happen to FORGET that company is coming -- and aren't responding appropriately to her Martha Stewart streak. (Once, the person who comes in to do the vacuuming etc. couldn't make it -- and I missed my cue.)

Actually, this informal entertaining went over really well. Our two year olds destroyed the house anyway and the pizza was on special two for one. They promised to have us over next time. At least they won't feel the need to clean and put on a big production. Who has time?
