  • Creating a Cheap vacation...

OK...this is a purely selfish post...I just need some suggestions on how to put together an inexpensive, fun vacation from any of the vacation experts out there

    Kris,

Check out the website http://www.Frommers.com -- they have a lot of information. Also, there is a magazine called Frommer's Budget Travel that you can find at bookstores (about $4.00) that will have timely ideas.

For the family or just you and Thomas?

This is how we saved a lot of money on our trip. Airline tickets and car reservations were done through Expedia. I got the airline tickets during a brief hours-long rate "war" one day and ended up paying $300 for two round trip tickets from DFW to Logan (that's a fairly good price I think). The car rental was cheap as well. For the best savings on a place to stay - go to a military base if you can!!! If there is one nearby stay there! You get reasonable hotel accomodations (two rooms, an eat-in kitchen, and a bathroom plus free parking) for a dirt-cheap rate ($30/day). If you have a kitchen in your suite, use it! Buy a gallon of milk, a box of cereal, and a few little snacks and you'll be amazed at how much you save on eating out every day for your family. Also - if you can, get a cell phone with roaming - that way you can contact whomever you need to within major metropolitan areas according to your pre-determined rates. MUCH better than using the hotel's (or military base's) phones. Anyway, that's all I can think of at the moment.

          Also-

If you don't need to rent a car- don't. If you're going to a big city with good transportation- save your money and use the transit system: DC, NY, Pittsburgh, Boston and most cities in Europe. (I don't know about any other big cities in the states)

Of course this is much easier when you're not carting around ten billion suitcases and kids, dogs and umbrellas. But- once you get to where you are staying- go local. It's also a great way to get to see the city.
