  • Why I should no longer read true crime books....

My dh was on call this weekend and it was late at night and I was reading another book by John Douglas (the FBI serial killer profiler). I heard a creaking noise outside and I freaked out because I just **knew** that someone was trying to pry open the window to our basement.

So I called the police and they were pretty nice about coming over to check things out. I'm pretty embarrassed about it and wonder what the neighbors think about the police cruiser pulling up in the middle of the night.

Accordingly, my new resolution is to only read these books when my dh is home.

    Kelly,

I am the same way about stuff like this, and scary things on tv, too. I distinctly remember one night when I didn't follow the "rule" I made for myself about this -- when I went to bed, I swore I could hear something upstairs. I got myself so worked up that I was crying and I finally paged my husband. He told me to go upstairs and look everywhere that someone could be hiding while talking to him on the phone. I looked in every closet and of course there was no one there, so I went back downstairs and went to sleep. Fast forward to the next morning, when I was putting away laundry -- I opened the linen closet door and out jumped one of my cats -- THAT is what I had been hearing and I didn't check that closet in the middle of the night because I knew a person couldn't get in there because of the shelves. I don't know why the cat didn't meow -- he is still a pretty meek guy. Anyway, all of that to let you know that I have definitely BTDT.
