  • From practice back to training?

Several of the new docs here are talking about going back to residency or a different fellowship after only a year out of training...and even my own dh is considering a 1 year fellowship in Microbiology (yah..THAT's gonna happen!)

This all started after a friend of ours, who was a hospitalist for a year suddenly dropped everything and within a couple of months had gone back to do a critical care residency. He and his wife had been out of training a year or two..and then a slot opened up that hadn't been filled.....

Is this something that happens more than I think? I had really never heard of anything like this and now it seems like a lot of people here are talking about doing it....

Jon'd talked about doing a fellowship later in life if the military won't allow him to do one after residency. I think it isn't common, but also isn't an entirely unheard-of scenario.

One of the pediatricians here (with 20 years in) decided to go back and do a radiology fellowship. I can't imagine what that must have been like for him or for his family!!

        Jenn,

One of the hospitalists here wants to go back and to either anesthesiology or radiology..the reason? money. He says that he gets dumped on by everyone....surgeons, specialists, etc... but that he gets almost half of the pay because payment is based on procedures and not thinking....This has become a hot topic in our house as well, because Thomas sees a lot of patients who were operated and were never seen again post-op by their surgeons...the surgeons operate and then consult internal med to get the patients off of their service....many have developed infections that went untreated, etc....and even my hubby is all up in arms right now...He feels ticked off that he is consulted for a raging infection from a knee replacement operation that left the patient in a coma...that he is the one to treat the infection, get the patient out of a coma and get them back home...he is the one to direct the surgeon to remove the knee, etc...and then the surgeon's fee is over 10 times his. :/ He finds himself resenting that right now...because what is billed is a procedure (ie removing the knee) and not the time and expertise needed to save someone who is septic and comatose....(rant, rant )

In any case, I'm really curious to see what happens. This particular hospitalist is really good....but he wants fair compensation and is tired of being dumped on......

I think Thomas is just the perpetual student type...and if he decided to do another fellowship (God help us)..I guess it's just a year............

Kristen, if he really wants to do this tell him that you need some time before hand to save money for that year he'd do a fellowship!
