If you could change just one aspect of your spouse's program, what would it be?

A reasonable rate of pay

I selected "other" because the one aspect that I think the military neglects is teaching them how to be effective managers. They are supposed to learn by example but all they end up learning is what not to do. The expectation is that by third year they are managing the interns and the 2nd year staff. Well... not everyone is an effective manager. Some are too lenient and are taken advantage of, some are way to hard and morale suffers. They need at the minimum, a rudimentary course in management to learn the basics. So many of my husband's co-workers have gone the college to medical school to residency route and literally have never worked before. (or never worked beyond the college jobs to make money!) It's just like the Second Lieutenants coming straight out of ROTC who are suddenly put in charge of a group of 30 people. Of course, I don't hear Donald Rumsfeld calling me for my opinions...

I chose "other" because everything has been great so far. Can I say I love anesthesia?! Matt has weekends off, and is home by 5 pm on normal days, and by 7 or 8 pm on late-call days.



After talking to Matt, I would add a course or something on teaching the residents on how to bill, and managing techniques. We attended a BBQ not too long ago, and there were a couple of former residents there who were now practicing, and they kept asking the attendings for advice on billing, etc. Matt said it something that you learn by trial and error, and he wishes it were different.

Crystal! Wow! I am in awe of your current schedule! Come back and talk to us in a few months about his schedule. If it is still as wonderful as it is now, I will beg my husband to switch specialties!
