I am SO glad everybody here seems to be OK.

I didn't see this news until late last night right before bed and one of my first thoughts was ALL of the Minnesota people on this website.

    Simply awful tragedy.

Who uses a machete to cut through red tape
With fingernails that shine like justice
And a voice that is dark like tinted glass

I'm glad everyone here is OK!

There's a blog we've been following for a couple years; the gal writing it was a student at OHSU, and wrote very well and entertainingly. She went to Minneapolis for her residency in EM. Woke up this morning to a new entry:

I imagine she was kept pretty busy last night!

Sandy- thanks for the link. That's a different perspective on this.

Fiona posted another entry about what she did last night (answer: not a lot directly to do with the bridge disaster, but some):

This random and tragic event has been so scary. We are in Minneapolis this summer, and my kids are really scared from what happened. We've crossed the bridge that collapsed many times in the last month - it's under a mile from where I grew up - by the University of Minnesota. The Mississippi is a gorge for 7 miles as it runs through much of Minneapolis and St. Paul - so it has steep and high banks. My kids were scared when we crossed the river today on a side street bridge- such a common activity. They were also scared of stairways collapsing under us in a couple of larger buildings today.

I'm sorry they found out about it... but everyone was talking at the ice cream shop where we were when it happened, and then back on the block where we're staying. Family were text messaging us. At least we don't have a television, because I would have been tempted to look.

A neighbor where we are staying is a firefighter who was one of the first responders. I'm so amazed at how brave he and the other rescue workers are. His wife told me he does water rescue... maybe all firefighters do. I saw his van home today, so maybe he was able to rest. His kids have been great friends to ours while we've been here.

I had no idea that you were in the twin cities this summer. That really is frightening! I'm glad that you are all ok.

My children heard it on the news before I did and they are still very upset....more upset that I would have thought. Our older two were babysitting our younger 3 and they heard it on the news. We were only gone for about 1 hour, but it was enough time that when we walked through the front door even our 3 year old was talking about it. We've had a lot of talks about it, but the kids insist that we won't ever be driving over bridges again.

It's a frightening, random, awful thing. I'm so glad to hear you are safe....

I'm glad you are all okay too. There are quite a few from this group in Minnesota. We're here for DH's external rotations.
