Communication from the hospital

Yeah, sometimes text will work when a voice call won't go through.

If that doesn't work, might it be worth a cheap cell phone for you that's a local call from the hospital (prepaid, so you can just cancel it after this rotation)?

That really sucks. What I would do is switch to Vonage and get the area code that you want so that calling you would be a local call. If you have to keep your old number, you could have both. It would kind of be like your own private cell phone plan. Also, you can have calls from your vonage number forwarded to your cell phone or to simulring if you aren't home.

ETA: I missed that this wasn't a permanent thing. How long will he be at this hospital?

Would getting him a calling card be an option?

I usually just page DH and he calls me back. My cell phone's area code is long distant, but he is still able to call me.

Try carrier pigeons.

Aside from being impractical, unsterile, and noisy, they might work...unless your DH's hospital is one of those "No carrier pigeons allowed unless they are pigeons for the blind" joints.

Or ESP. I do that sometimes. I just sit really still and think, "DH...DH...DH...pick up some milk on your way home...."

Pigeons would probably be more effective, though.

Oddly, esp works with my sister and a couple of friends, but has not yet worked with dh.

I would get a cheap calling card, and he can call from the hospital. I find it strange about no cell phones- 1. they are professionals and should be treated as such. 2. many services use cell phones to contact each other within the hospital to discuss pts. 3. this is the 21st century. I am sorry, the lack of communication must really be lame.
