Re: For those of you with a Wii...

Yes....those 11 year olds take the term "babyish" very seriously! :>

He loves all the Mario games and I think they are still "cool". I'm not sure about Zelda.....he's complained about the animation.

Honestly, I'm sure he will now think everything is babyish unless it is a FPS game. We don't allow those. (If only all the parents around here did the same. Too bad all the 11 year olds here seem to play Halo.)

The Wii is not babyish. In fact all our adult friends love the Wii. Most games are available on all the platforms. Guitar Hero III comes on the Wii, and there is nothing babyish about that. The Wii is absolutely a blast.

Re: For those of you with a Wii...

My son counters the across platforms argument with complaints about the controller. I know, I know. :> The controller is supposed to be the cool part. Still, in his circle, the kids are complaining about not having a traditional controller for some of the games.

I'm not trying to start a Wii fight here. (Or even a wee fight ...) I'm just fretting that I may have missed his excitement window. I'm also concerned because he has never been interested in his Gameboy -- he's been an XBOX kid since age 5. He has a Gamecube, but plays it sparingly.

I hope my Wii gift pans out for him-- otherwise - I'll be selling it on Ebay for Playstation II funds.

Angie, there is also a classic controller, and the game cube controllers can also be used.

Re: For those of you with a Wii...

Good news! I have to say it is tough to ferret out the necessary info from him without giving it up that I have a Wii in the basement already!

He's been begging for months - and stopped last week. Last night, he told us he didn't want one any longer. I nearly croaked. I hope this is just a reverse psychology ploy. It is odd that two of his friends have listed their Wiis on Ebay to sell for the holidays. Maybe they just like money more than video games now. :> DS was hoping to get me to buy TWO Wiis so he could sell both at a profit and then get himself one "for free" with the money he made.

Can you use DS games in the Wii? Do you know if the Horsez and Catz games are available for Wii? We're looking for some titles that will interest DD (8).

I don't *think* handheld games can be played on the wii. Gamecube games can, though; it has spots to plug in the controllers (so we can play our donkey konga! - love that game)

Re: For those of you with a Wii...

We love our Wii and use it VERY regularly even after having it for almost a year. As for games, there seems to be a ton of old ones and new. We've downloaded a bunch off of the Wii Shopping Channel. (I love the old Mario games and DH is a total geek for old Zelda.) We also have the Wii Sports, Wii Games, Zelda: Twilight Princess, and about 4 Metroids. (Plus all of our old GameCube games that will run on it, too.)

All of our kids do VERY well with the Wii Games and Wii Sports, even our terribly uncoordinated 5 year old. I really like that the Wii Sports has things under the "training" menu that become progressively tougher as you work your way through them.

DH will probably get the most recent Metroid for Christmas. Or that surgery one if I can find it down here.

Re: For those of you with a Wii...

Angie - that is so ironic! We got the kids an xbox 360 for Christmas last year and now we're going to sell it and get a Wii! DS says that all of the boys at school have a Wii, but the biggest reason we want to switch is because there are NO girly games for xbox 360 for DD1. Also, this thread has convinced me that the wii is *probably* more fun...surgery, Harry Potter spells!

I would like to know about the DS games working in the wii...DD1 has Horsez and Catz for her DS. I believe this week DS is coming out with the first American Girl game.

Now I've got to get the xbox ready for ebay... :|

Re: For those of you with a Wii...

I hate our current XBox because it doesn't have many adventure type games or girl friendly games. It is mostly made for the sports and shooter genres. I hope the Wii will get us away from that. If I had to buy a non-Wii system, I would go for the Playstation III. That thing is horridly priced, though.

This thread has convinced me to go ahead with the Wii gift though. I think kids just get easily bored and like what's on the other side of the fence. What can you do?

Re: For those of you with a Wii...

DD wants a Wii badly. She doesn't want any of the other gaming systems, except maybe a DS. The Wii is by far the most popular gaming system in her peer group (she's 11 too).

We are planning on getting one, but we'll wait until after the holidays unless there are some available at Costco earlier. Anyway, the basement's not set up for the Wii yet and I don't want gaming in my living room!

For those of you with Guitar Hero -- what do you think of the graphics? I was planning to get it for my dh, but was told the graphics are really inappropriate for kids, and there is no way dh would only be playing it when the kids aren't around.

umm...it is slightly inappropriate...IE there are girls dancing on the stage in leather pants and bikini tops, some of the characters can be inappropriate but you can chose what you want them to wear so that can be avoided...but other then those two things its not like there are any "parts" shown...

If any of you caught the today show this morning....you might have seen me walking away empty handed from the Nintendo World Store. I got there at 6am and the line was a NYC block long. The staff counted off at 7:40am and told those of us who didn't make the cut that they were sold out for the day...

So I am bringing my younger sister with me tomorrow at 4:00am to pick one up. They restock everyday. Wish me luck!
