    Re: Target bag recycling

I always seem to get lectures from the clerks about putting too much stuff in my bags, or mixing food and non-food items when I pack my own stuff into the reusable bags ! Drives me nuts! I always feel so guilty taking all the plastic bags after living in Ireland where everyone carries the reusables (and packs their own groceries!) cso they charge for the plastic ones.
Sounds like things are changing here though which is good!

      Re: Target bag recycling

At first I was scoping out the most "granola" looking clerk, assuming they'd be less likely to huff and puff about my bags. But at Home Depot tonight, I just went up to the first person. When I said "I have a bag" and handed it to her, she started looking for the bar code to figure out where to scan it. It was an Ikea bag, which looks decidedly un-Home Depot. I started to explain at about the same moment she figured it out, and we both laughed uncomfortably. I don't care. I don't need those bags - and I can't tell you how good it makes me feel to know I'm not using them. The volume of those things I was collecting on a weekly basis is just shameful. I couldn't reuse all of them, no matter how many trash cans I line, or how much dog poop I pick up.

I took my used to be plastic bottles Whole Foods bag into Target yesterday. I could tell I threw him off a bit which surprised me. But he then said "hey, this is a nice bag!"

I wonder how long it will be until Target hops on the cool design branded reusable bag.

Jenn, you are inspiring me! I think I am going to do a neighborhood battery recycling. I have a bin about the size of a shoe box full of used batteries. And I just got the coolest battery charger thing from Costco -- a charger, 4 AAA, 8AA, and adapters to use the AAs as C or D for $25.

Ooh, those enloop things? We got one of those sets at costco, too; DH says they're supposed to be really good.

We actually go through ours. Cleaning out litter boxes every day will do that. We have a small stash, but it never grows out of control. We pretty much only go shopping once a week, and get a lot of stuff at Costco, all of which probably also helps.

Report back on those Enloop batteries. I almost bought a set, but we have tons of batteries at home right now.... When we're out, I may go back to pick those up - report back, please!

If you're able to reuse them all - that's awesome. You shop for 2 and have 4 cats. I shop for 4 ... and do my grocery shopping at Target, where it seems they have they weirdest bagging policy known to man.

But do the cashiers now about them?

I was going to say the same thing! The $1.99 ones are really cool! They zip up into a wallet sized thingy. I'd buy some if I didn't already have the Ikea ones.

I was just there and didn't see them. I check more closely next time. Seriously, how about putting them by the cashiers so you can grab one and ask them to use it for your bags?

I think it's hit or miss. I've heard from people in this area that they've seen the bags at their target (and a crowd around them), but I haven't seen them at either of the targets I frequent (and I do mean 'frequent').

My closest Target is kind of sucky...for a Target. The next closest one doesn't have them either -- at least I didn't see any when I zipped through.

                            Ok- just an update...

Even DECA (the Commissary people) have gone new old school and are selling fabulous reusable grocery bags. I actually like them more than the Whole Goods bags because they're sized more closely with an actual grocery bag and that way they don't end up weighing 30 pounds a bag.

(and the commissary is now selling organic foods and produce AND paper products.)

I can get a bunch of bags- I think they're a buck or less if anyone wants some.

A good list from Real Simple of basic things you can do to reduce waste. The whole "bottled water" thing only sunk in with me about 2 months ago. Now I don't buy it unless I'm absolutely parched. I always recycled the bottles, so I thought nothing of it. It never occurred to me to consider the energy wasted in packaging and transporting the water.
