  • ROTD: Update on Starbucks-speak

I ordered a skinny mocha today expecting a mocha made with skim milk.

Right? Wrong! Sort of wrong. Within the last few weeks, Starbucks has changed ( ) what skinny means. Now it is skim milk, no whip, and the world's nastiest sugar-free chocolate syrup. I thought I'd just learn the new lingo and have my drink until the first sip. Nasty, nasty horrible stuff.

If I wanted sugar-free syrup, wouldn't I have just asked for that?

The very same thing just happened to my mother and she reported that very same result. She said it was so bad she threw it away.

      Too funny.

I WILL say that sugar free vanilla is MUCH better than the chocolate.

(PS -- I looked it up and the sugar free syrup saves you OVER 100 calories....ug.)

The TWO Starbucks in town here still have no idea what a "split drip" is so I imagine a skinny is still just milk. We shall see.

Oh, Flynn, you will have to do some investigative reporting and find out.

And I have to ask -- what is split drip? Half calf/half decaf?

If I want to save 100 calories I will order a latte. Momma needed some chocolate today.
I asked for a new one and they gave it to me.

My other gripe -- the cafe au lait is a "misto." WTH?

Me: I'd like a grande cafe au lait.
Starbucks guy: A what? I don't think we have that.
Me: Its coffee with steamed milk -- half of each.
SG: Oh, that is a misto.
Me (biting a hole in my tongue): Great! I'll have one of those!

          EW!

I have nothing to add. I don't think I'm allowed to comment on good coffee. I've been out of the loop for too long...

In the land of bigger portions (here), the smallest size is "tall," not "short." Sometimes I just want a short mocha and they won't make it for me.

I am so glad I hate coffee. I think my head would explode if I had to learn all this new vocabulary to be able to effectively "coffee-speak."

Please, please tell me that this was a type-o, and there is no "splitting" of a baby cow...

Seriously, it's all completely foreign to me.

You can still get a short at Starbucks in Seattle.

Yes, it was a typo. Half CAF/half decaf.

                  Nellie,

This is why I only order a regular coffee/dark roast I can't keep up with all of the coffee fashion trends.

I hope you got a new drink for free. That just stinks.

This drives my DH crazy too. It's why - on principle - he always orders a "large cafe au lait" at Starbucks. Sometimes they know right away what he wants and just ring it up, and sometimes he has to explain what it is. Cracks me up every time.

I actually intentionally ordered the sugar-free hazelnut syurp today - hoping it was palatable. It wasn't.

Took me a few minutes to figure out ROTD ... but I'm proud (and ashamed) that I did.

see..why does ordering a coffee have to be so difficult. i dont even like starbucks. they're overpriced and it's bitter. and to be a total dorkus...when im FORCED to go there..i order a small regular flavored coffe with extra milk please.

all this mocha, tall (small) grand, schmand, half caf, delato, potato, tomato stuff is too much for my country hick self.

                        /rant. sorry

p.s i like 7-eleven coffee just fine. or any truck stop for that matter.

Glad to know I am not the only passive-aggressive cafe au lait orderer.

This was the same Starbucks where the cashier told me about "this really cool band" named the cure. uch:

You're funny Sylvia. Delato potato. That might be their new drink.

I like to mess with them, too. I always order a small cappuccino just to mess w/ their heads. and then I like to wait to see if they ask me if I want whipped cream.
