Re: I feel like eating sushi....

Sorry Peggy. I am an anomaly when it comes to sushi-eating. Namely, I can eat about 50 pieces in one sitting. I know, I know. It's really grotesque. I think normal people eat between 10-15 if they have other stuff to eat at the same time (like Nellie pointed out).

I don't know about the spoon thing. Mostly, rice is served in bowls, so you sort of shove the rice into your mouth rather than picking up each kernel. We ONLY ate with chopsticks while growing up and we always had to neatly place the chopsticks across the rim of our bowls. I had a hard time eating with a knife and fork when I spent my year in Germany!

I'm curious about the spoon thing - maybe it's a regional difference within Japan itself!

      Alison-

My first "date" with Rick (after we had already spent a weekend together...) was at an all you can eat sushi place. He was all worried about looking like a pig. Not a problem, as I ate ridiculous amounts.

I LOVE sushi and this thread has tormented me all week. I'm going tomorrow night. (payday)

You lucky duck, Jenn. Dh won't go with me tonight, because it's "too cold out."

Peggy, if you have the chance, go with someone who knows a bit about sushi and can show you the ropes. You'll be fine on your own after that, and know exactly what you like and don't like.

Re: I feel like eating sushi....

Thanks! I have had sushi before-- just not proper sushi!
(At a real sushi establishment, I mean...)

I *think* I have to wait until I'm not pregnant anymore, though... Even though a lot of sushi doesn't actually have raw fish in it...

            Peggy-

If Ichiban (on 355 between MV Ave. & Watkins Mill Rd.) is still there, they have great sushi and Korean BBQ.

Yep- It's still there. I'll have to try it! Thanks for the tip!

I've never tried Korean barbeque but it sounds yummy.

Are you kidding me? Chicago is a food mecca and there is definitely good and fresh sushi to be found!!!!

Mirai is great but pricey. We sat next to Vince Vaughn the one and only time we went there!! He's a tall drink of water! But he smokes

Sushi Kushi Toyo in Lake Forest is also terrific but outside the city. I'm sure there are more but those are just 2 I recall from our Chi-town days.

I LOVE sushi and japanese food in general. I think I am a freak of nature as well. I eat all the weird stuff others shy away from. Ankimo (monk fish liver), Uni (sea urchin), Ikura (salmon eggs). I swear one day, I am going to surprise my DH with a trip to Japan for a week of vacation of the best sushi in the world. $$$$$

I think we might have had monkfish liver the other night. It was on the menu. The waitress brought us an amuse sort of deal and there was an unidentified item. DH and I agreed it had once been in the sea. On reflection, it would be about liver-shaped in a cross-section sort of way. Not great, not horrible. Whatever it was.
