I am in need of a new vacuum, but of course I am short on funds. I don't know if I should get an upright vacuum or a canister. I have had a canister since I was in college and it has served me well, except that it is a pain in the butt to pull around and use on stairs.

What kind of vacuum would anyone else suggest or recommend?

    eBay!

If you're looking to save a few dollars, get a cheap bagless vac on eBay (http://www.eBay.com).

    Two good reasons:
No bags to forget or to buy.
Having a $20 vac die on you hurts much less than having a $400 oreck die on you.

    Just my two bits!

We have a Dirt Devil Ultra Swivel Guide. It is 12 AMP. I got it at KMart a couple of years ago for about $200 and am very pleased with it. I had a door-to-door salesperson for the Kirby vacuum (upwards of $2K/vacuum) vacuum with her vacuum after I vacuumed with mine and she was disappointed to see that mine had done so well at a fraction of the cost.

Wish I could offer some advice on this one. But I have owned five vacuums in the last two years . Aashish and I bought our last one from Best Buy, I think. Luckily we got the warranty with it. We had to return one twice and finally they upgraded our vacuum for free.

We have one of those Hoover windtunnel bagless vacuums. It's done well considering we have three cats and a dog! It wasn't that expensive but we did buy it at the PX on base so I don't know how much it would cost in the civilian world.
