    Your options IN the city have expanded exponentially and let's not forget Silver Spring- also Metro accessible!

    It's completely doable- my family had been going back and forth from DC to the 'burgh for 35 years now.

    PS- the Amtrak also goes from the 'burgh to DC as does Southwest if you're interested in dumping the car rental aspect.

    The Metro in Old Town Alexandria is actually a bit of a walk from the waterfront parts of Old Town. Totally adult walkable but might be long with kids.
