I belong to a gym with a club rule of no cell phones in the exercise area. My last gym? Don't really EVER need to hear some of those conversations. I think my ears are stained.

There are signs up at our gym forbidding it and I haven't really seen it. My Ob/gyn actually goes to our gym, too, and once my husband saw her on the phone there returning a page--but she had politely gone out to the front foyer. I knew I liked her.

I told my husband about this thread and he said that way more annoying than cell phones is the wafting scent of perfume overkill.

Our old Y in Nashville banned phones b/c most have cameras now and they didn't want those in the locker rooms. I haven't seen any rules about that here, though. I guess it wouldn't serve iphone users to ban them now.

I'm with Tara, my ipod is usually too loud for me to hear any conversations.

My old gym had a strict no cell phone policy even in the changing rooms (so that people couldn't take any pictures). There was a lobby area in each of the men's and women's changing rooms to allow for cell phone use etc.

Meh. Not on my radar. If you want to talk on the phone while you are on the elliptical, I really don't care.

Re: People on the Phone... At the gym.

The phone thing does not bother me because I usually have my music going and don't hear anything else. I take my phone with me sometimes because I am meeting someone and it seems we always miss one another. So, the texting begins with "where r u" - "over by the elipticals - last row"

HOWEVER, I cannot stand when people chat on their phones in stores, public places, etc. I do not need to hear what you said and she said and your theories on "X" or "y". I have to admit that I am not a phone chatting kind of gal. I only use it to get and provide pertinent necessary information and it is over - hang up. My mom is a chatter. She will answer calls from my aunt and she will chat around the store while she browses. When she does this I leave her. I have told her that I cannot handle being seen with a "chatty"
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

I agree with the perfume overkill comment too!

Cells are not allowed in the gym, but people (suit types and the lay people alike) bring them in. It doesn't bother me (as I too wear my iPod) except when I can hear ____ yelling at ____ about: ______. The last blank can be everything from a business meeting, to weird sex issues. Go figure.

I honestly have no idea if our gym has any rules against phones in either locker rooms or out in the workout areas. And I always have mine with me because it's also my iPod.

                  Oops...

ETA: I only use it for music while I'm working out, though. No one usually bugs me when I'm at the gym.
