Austin, TX as a conference spot?

Is Austin a good place to accompany your spouse to a conference in April/May? Now I know getting away and having alone time from three wonderful children is worth going anywhere. However, I don't know much about Austin as a city, not sure if I would have a car or if it would be worth spending 5 days there mostly alone.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Austin is a great town- and in April it will be nice and warm. There's lots of stuff to do and should you be so inclined, we're a mere hour and a half down the road. (or one $15 Amtrak ride.)

Oh - yeah! Austin is awesome in the Spring. Lots to do/pedestrian friendly (or the most ped friendly city in Texas at least), great food, culture & shopping. Lots to do with the little ones too.

Jenn, anyplace is a good spot to accompany your spouse to a conference without kids! Austin isn't Hawaii, but....my vote is that you say yes, go and pamper yourself during the whole trip! 5 DAYS? Awesome!

Austin is the BEST PLACE ON EARTH!! I love it! We would go back in a heartbeat, if the city had an academic medical center.

Whatever you do, though, don't book anything in Austin on the weekend of the South-by-Southwest music concert. Don't hold me to this, but I swear it's usually at the end of March or early April. Otherwise, I am SO JEALOUS that you get to go to God's little piece of heaven...

You should see if there is anything going on in Zilker Park in the spring. You also can go rafting, spelunking at Airman's Cave, and there's lots of nice shopping.
