I think it's the baby steps that will end up counting the most. I try to buy recycled paper products (which or course are only sold at the Gucci Grocery) and use environmentally friendly cleaning products. We bought the water efficient washer/dryer which was really expensive but has since more than paid for itself with my 15 dollar water bills. I hope that when we move to DC I'll be able to give up my car entirely. If not, then I plan on trading in the Saturn for either the Prius or the Civic HX or a Mini- (love the mini- not sure about the gas mileage but it's got to be better than my car!)
Another thing I'm going to investigate the next time I redo a room is the non-toxic paints. Again, they are hard to find and are more expensive but anything that the regular garbage people won't take makes me nervous. So, I have four cans of icky paint rusting in my grass until I can take them to the chemical recycling place. Scary.
I have also heard of a place that makes biodegradable baggies for dog poo disposal (a critical issue when you live in a downtown area like we do!)
Maybe we should do an article for the newsletter with tips and ideas and websites. Janet- can you send you contacts to one of us, and anyone else that has any ideas, let us know!
