  • Obscenity by way of phonetics?

I saw this article (excerpt in blue below) about some group that is protesting a new song released by Brittany Spears. The title is "If U Seek Amy." I assumed, before reading the article, it had lesbian overtones and people were worked up about that. But no--they claim that the title is an obscenity when pronounced really fast. So I sat here, saying it out loud over and over (getting confused looks from the dog, who was wondering why I was talking to myself, I think).

I can sort of see it. It just seems really unclever. And sort of undignified for a mother. And maybe lame in its raunchiness. Perhaps ignoring her might serve their cause better than drawing publicity.

NEW YORK (Billboard) – The Parents Television Council is warning parents about the Britney Spears song "If U Seek Amy" and urging radio stations not to broadcast it because the nonprofit organization believes it "would violate the broadcast indecency law" if aired between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Saying the title phrase quickly out loud produces a sound akin to spelling out the F-word, said PTC president Tim Winter. "There is no misinterpreting the lyrics to this song, and it's certainly not about a girl named Amy," he said of the track, the third single from Spears' new Jive album, "Circus."

So I guess you didn't hear about Krispy Kreme's abortion donuts. That wasn't the PTC but it was another group with some time to grind.

As for obscenity by way of phonetics, considering most kids can't spell for jack anyway, I'm not sure they could put it together.
I hadn't heard about the pro-choice doughnuts. So I googled and found the press release:

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is honoring American's sense of pride and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day, by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day, Jan. 20. By doing so, participating Krispy Kreme stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies -- just another reminder of how oh-so-sweet "free" can be.

Are people really upset about this? Honestly? Does anyone genuinely think that they meant to refer to the Freedom of Choice Act? Come'on. It's gotta be unfortunate wording. How on earth would that sell doughnuts? Tying abortion to jelly-filled pastries? Not a great marketing image.

I don't think the wording is offensive, and I'm pro-life, for crying out loud. I do feel really sorry for the guy from PR who I suspect is now out of a job!

      That is really silly.

re: Britney... . I agree with Tara that the attention is just going to make an undeserving song more popular.

It took me a long time, too. It doesn't sound like THE obscenity, it sounds (if you try really hard to MAKE it sound that way) like you're spelling the obscenity. It's all stupid.

I agree...that is about all I could get with more effort than it deserved! How stupid.

And I just read the lyrics; the line with the title in it is something like "All the boys and all the girls want to if you seek Amy"

                Hardly subtle.

Either I have a weird accent or a very naieve mind. . . Try as I might, I cannot make Amy or Todd sound obsene.

It's not just Todd or Amy, but what precedes and follows that makes the phonetic obscenities.

I understand that. I was just abbreviating rather than writing out if-you-seek-amy, etc. It doesn't sound obscene when I say it.
