Match Day Stories?

I know there is a section for all of the MS4 spouses that have been talking about interviewing etc, but I would love to hear from already matched too.

What was match day like...was it fun, scary, exciting...did you do anything special?

No idea -- probably somewhere in the cosmos b/c of the platform switch. I'm sure Kris or Angie could retrieve them ... probably.

No story here b/c we were an early match back then which meant sitting at home and waiting for a phone call. But I wish all of you that are going through this good luck!

UTSW (Dallas) didn't do much, just put their envelopes in their lockers. I couldn't get off work that day, so DH came and met me for lunch at Texas Land and Cattle. We opened the envelope, and we were kind of shocked, since we thought we'd end up staying in Dallas. I'm sure our waiter thought we were nuts when we ordered our lunch...

We went out to a pub with some friends that night. We were expecting to celebrate staying there another four years, but we were all kind of bummed. We ended up going back to our apartment, eating pizza, drinking champagne, and playing Risk. After pledging to stay BFFs forever (knowing we'd probably grow apart), we all came to accept that DH and I wouldn't be there anymore, and we were all okay. We're much happier that we ended up here in Oklahoma, but the day was spent kind of in a numb state.

When Paul did match last year, it was rough. Everything pointed to him getting into Cedars, but when he opened the envelope (I had to work!) he got Family Medicine somewhere else.
It hit him really hard, because the way they had hyped him up, he thought it was a done deal.

This year, we are much more cautious. In addition, he applied all over the country - opened up his chances greatly.

Ack someone pass me an antacid, looking at the pics of our Match day still makes me feel all that stress. Anywho here is a pic of the envelopes, couldn't get a pic w/out the head, one day I should photo shop it out.

Programs can be deceiving. Dh's #1 basically told us it was a done deal yet he didn't match there. They are liars, what can I say. We did end up with our #3 and were thrilled to be coming back to nyc. Dh wasn't close with his class because he stayed an extra year for research and basically graduated with the class behind him. We went to our favorite coffee house, watched the match via the internet - it was broadcast- sipped delicious coffe and waited for the email. When it arrived we were very happy!! I don't really remember what we did for the rest of the day.

Good luck to everyone in the Match this year!

Dh had already graduated from medical school, and so we checked his result online from home. He got his #1 pick, and for that I'm grateful. I don't remember what we did that day either...

We were long distance when DH matched and not engaged. He called me from the place where they picked up their envelopes. It was weird because in DH's group of friends he was the only one NOT in AOA (missed it due to his first year "playing too much") and he got his first choice in the match anyway in General Surgery.

None of his buddies who received all amazing recs on their rotations, AOA, excellent test scores etc. etc. got their first choice. There were LOTS of sighs, crying, and basic depression so DH left the site for about 15 minutes to make his calls. It was a pretty heavy day for him because he couldn't be "too happy." I think he hung out with about 9-15 people during med school and 3 were psyched besides him. Most got in their top 5...but most of them were SO SURE they would get their top choice. DH felt badly for them, they had been disciplined since their first day at med school and here he was with his first choice. Thinking back, we have decided he nailed his interviews so the AOA miss didn't matter and the rest of his resume was exceptional. We still look back though and say "there is NO WAY you should have matched at that program!" Even his mentor was wondering if putting it #1 was not realistic. I guess you just never know.

The good news was that DH matched at the program he wanted since he was in undergrad and BEFORE he knew me and it was 20 minutes away from where I was living at the time. We were psyched.
