      Re: Gupta's out

I hope I didn't offend anyone with my earlier posts. I was just thinking out loud. I must learn to make better use of smilies.

Once I read Julia's post (cross posted with my first) I realized I might be making this a LOT more complicated than it actually is. I have also been thinking recently that I'm SOOOOO glad I'm not the one that has to call any of these decisions. It is a time for sacrifice in our country and things are not fair. I'm not sure there is any way to make things fair. Good people will get hurt in the process. I would have a hard time dealing with that. This makes me a lousy leader.

Anyhoo. I bet Gupta does make a boatload.

Even small, crappy shows pay really really well. My cousin made something like $75K when writing for "World's Wildest Police Videos". TV pays well (when you're employed -- but there is generally no job security). Her current salary is more than my husband makes, and she's executive producer on a show on HGTV. I would guess the guy makes $1 to $2 million a year just for the CNN gig.

Is anyone else thinking we should have a Surgeon General as health care is apparently being reformed as we speak? I would rather see someone else in that position, but I'd also like to see someone right about now.

I know what the neurosurgeon residents graduating here in the last few years have taken for a STARTING salary - I can only imagine what Gupta makes but I'm sure its more then a boatload.

I think 1-2 million might be at the lower end of what he makes. He does specials, too, right? And the whole Paging Doctor Gupta segments, and some editorial-type writing for CNN.com.

                Re: Gupta's out

I agree with Alison, the man is making well over 2mil for the CNN gig alone. I think he is very popular (well, I like him!) and I think he'd be compensated for that.

I just can't believe he would walk away from the opportunity for the sake of money. He could easily be SG for the next 3.5 years then bow out after the first term, and go back to his private practice and CNN. He would be seriously a hot commodity for CNN after being the SG for nearly 4 years!!

Does anyone know if past SG are forced to resign from everything once they take the post? Can they keep their university affiliations, privileges at hospitals, ownership in their private practices??

                  Re: Gupta's out

This article suggests that his withdrawal may have had a lot to do with Daschle's, and that he may have been expecting more of a policy role than they were willing to give him.

I caught the tail end of a statement Gupta made on CNN. He said something about expecting a 3rd child, and that he wasn't ready to take on the type of time commitment and travel commitment that the job would entail. That's all I caught.

                      HAHAHAHAAHA!!

Ok, I don't believe a WORD of that. No NSG I know has EVER let his family come between him and a great job opportunity. I don't what's going on with Gupta, but it's not that!!

I didn't buy into that statement either. It sounded a whole lot like the "Resigning to spend more time with my family." that you get from politicos who I've been asked to step down.

I don't know if he was asked to, or did for the possible reasons outlined here. I don't care either way -- I was never a huge fan. DH's cousin will be disappointed tho -- she wanted his job at CNN.

Yep. She's done some local TV, too. She didn't actually believe that she could get Gupta's job (she's also Indian - obviously - and GORGEOUS), but I do think it's an eventual goal of hers.

Isn't that code for something like, "I can't be expected to have a family, a mistress, and a job too!"
