usmle scores

for those of you veteran spouses, I was wondering about the competiveness of residencies. My husband has been trying to find some information on what he needs on his Step 1 of the boards to successfully get into a surgery residency. He is in the USAF, so that makes some difference. my husband has asked me to pry some info out of you all.

Since he's Air Force, they will try to put him in an Air Force residency first.
That means that he's competing with fewer people but I'm not sure how much it really matters in the service. From what I've gathered, it's pretty mcuh whether you pass or not that matters. One of my husband's fellow USUHS grads didn't pass Step 3 and was forced to wait another month to start his residency. (he had to take it again and HAD to pass)
