BU med student arrested in Craigslist slaying

BOSTON — A Boston University medical student was arrested Monday in the shooting death in a hotel of a masseuse and the robbery of another woman who both advertised their services on Craigslist.
Phil Markoff, 22, was arrested during a traffic stop Monday afternoon on Interstate 95 in Walpole, south of Boston, Police Commissioner Ed Davis said at a news conference to announce the arrest. He is also suspected of being connected to an assault on a Las Vegas exotic dancer in Rhode Island last week.
"We are very, very happy to have this man off the street in such a timely way," Davis said.
Markoff's arrest came days after his image was shown on surveillance video at the hotels. Davis said that authorities had him under observation for days before making the arrest.
Authorities said Markoff was originally from upstate New York and now lives in Quincy, just south of Boston. A Facebook profile matching Markoff's identity, including his photograph, lists him as a 2007 graduate of State University of New York-Albany and in the 2011 class at BU.
A Boston University spokeswoman told Boston radio station WBZ-AM Markoff had been suspended from the medical school after his arrest.
Markoff is charged with killing Julissa Brisman, 26, who was found dead Tuesday at the Boston Marriott Copley Place. The New York City woman advertised massage services on Craigslist and had a massage table set up in the room where she was shot Tuesday, police said.
Markoff is scheduled to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday.
Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said Markoff is also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. In addition, Conley said Markoff is charged with kidnapping and armed robbery in a separate case involving another woman he met on Craigslist.
Police said they had long suspected that Brisman's killer was connected to a robbery at the Westin Copley Hotel in Boston.
Authorities believe Brisman's death also may be connected to the attempted robbery Thursday in Warwick, R.I., of an exotic dancer by a man responding to an ad she had posted on Craigslist. She was held at gunpoint before her husband entered the room and her attacker fled.
The four photos released Monday by Warwick police show a man in a dark jacket with a baseball cap pulled low, obscuring much of his face. The surveillance photos of the man were similar to those released from the Boston Marriott Copley Place.
Boston police said they've also received more than 150 tips about Brisman's killing.
Conley said authorities believe Markoff may have had other victims.
"There may be other victims out there, and if you are, we want you to come forward," said Conley.

Let's say it all together now... EWWWWWWWW.

And the whole thing is making me re-think switching careers to become a CraigsList massage therapist. It just doesn't seem safe anymore.

Scarry stuff - he looks so ordinary and normal (not creepy) - I will be curious to see if he was always wierd/off or if something made him SNAP!

My guess is Answer C- depends on his crowd. and Abigail, let's not blame the victim here, even though she could definitely have made better career choices... (she says, whilst putting on her overly-tight social worker panties...)

A little off to begin with
Trying to be the perfect overachiever kid expected of him
            Med school stress
            Getting married stress
            I would say he snapped

Also, the massage comment...if I'm taking it the right way..is like saying a girl wearing a short skirt deserved to be raped.

ITA, he looks so normal. So often you hear about things like this and you see the picture and it's not surprising. It's something in their eyes, creepy. I was wondering if they had the wrong guy.

I don't think the girl was asking for it but take a look at Craigslist and see if you want some of those weirdos meeting you in a hotel room for a "massage". She couldn't have put herself in a more vulnerable position. We all make choices......why would you put your life at risk like this?

No blaming the victim at all. Whether she was massaging or hooking or whatever, she sure didn't deserve his freakish fetish-gone-murder. My comment was more as a note of how how dangerous Craigslist stuff can be. People often treat Craigslist as this kind of cool "community" of people--like "it's OK, it's a Craigslister." I have had some super-weird, get-me-the-heck-outta-here run-ins when responding to Craigslist postings...for used furniture. I could have been her.

You're not taking it the right way. But that appears to be my fault in (inadvertent) implying, not your fault in reasonably inferring. I just meant it as an observation about how Craigslist is not this semi-underground cool group of people who are trustworthy. It is a bunch of strangers seeking to sell and buy. Regardless of what you're selling, you risk attracting weirdos. Unfortunately, some services for sale are going to attract even more weirdos than others.

Although, I am sure that there is some nutbag out there who responds to Beanie Baby "for sale" postings--the ultimate in innocuous--because he gets his creep-o jollies off of fondling little girls' toys or something.

Craigslist just seems like the perfect place to prey on someone. Of course I'm just a big chicken so I would never do the whole Craigslist thing. (I'm using this smilie because I am too lazy to go searching for one more appropriate...I put the winky guy here but again, too darn lazy).

Yeah, I am having a bad day all around with not conveying myself well. **sigh** I should go to bed early and start over fresh tomorrow, you know?

Anything where you don't know the other person (ie blind dating via internet) freaks me out. I've done exchanges through craigslist and look at different properties but I always had my husband there or met at a public place.

Did you hear about the woman who was murdered (I believe it was a while ago) when she responded to a Craigslist add claiming to be looking for a caretaker for kids... not something that you would expect to be a shady post - but just goes to show you need to be careful!

Lots of freaks out there. Massauers are especially vulnerable because people misunderstand the scope of their services. I have two high school friends that work as massauers. One has a "no funny business" disclaimer on her website.

                              Edit: This is her disclaimer:

No "extra" services will be rendered nor will inappropriate behavior, inappropriate language or harassment of any kind be tolerated. Extra services would include any services not listed on this page. The therapist reserves the right to refuse or stop services at any time if any of the above occurs. The therapist will be the sole judge of what is inappropriate. If the therapy session is stopped by the therapist as a result of the above specified behavior, the client shall forfeit payment in full for the scheduled appointment.
