Moving Advice Here!!!

Most of you are talking about moving to a attending job not out of med school or to a fellowship.

For anyone reading this. We just moved for fellowship and on a tight budget. Loaders (21 year olds working as retail stockers by day) got $15 tips, unloaders (small one man moving company/his side job) got $80 extra because it was Hot and I had a big load, and he was very good about not breaking anything. That's $120 total for 2 loaders, $200 for the unloaders. Praying "the job" pays for movers.

I think when we moved for residency we tipped like $20/head for the loaders and unloaders.

The first time we used professionals was when we moved for fellowship because it was required by the building we lived in and we were going cross country. I tipped about $40 each then but last move post training I tipped $50 each. I think if you have college kids/day labor-ors/etc. paying $25 or so is fine, but when you are with the professional movers they expect more and are often involved more/longer with your stuff so you tip them more.

BTW - I got the $50 tip number from here back in 2007. I was just thinking about inflation. For our next move which should happen this year (once I get my sh*t together and put the house on the market), you guys still think $50 is good? Right?

We tipped everyone daily for our last move. Those involved in packing, loading, u loading (such as the driver) ended up with $150 or $200 in tips. I couldn't think of a more fair way to do it, but our move was almost completely paid for so, though the tipping was costly, the cost of move was one of the least we've had.

We did $20 each for packers, loaders, and unloaders (same guys as the loaders, but different day). We also fed them - donuts and lunch (a local cheap fried chicken/rice joint they requested) for the packers, pizza dinner for the loaders - and we had our fridge stocked with bottles of water and gatorade for them.

We also did $20 each + lunch. The move took about 6 hours total.

Well, we are moved. I cannot say enough good stuff about Allied/Berger and the three guys that moved all my crap. The three of them got to my house on Monday, Sept 16th and began to pack. They took care to make sure that our beds/bathroom stuff & anything that would make this time more comfortable was packed last. On the 18th, they finished packing and loading. They made sure the gates/doors were closed if the dogs were around and even gave them treats. I bought them Starbucks each morning and breakfast. I also got them lunch each day. I asked them what they preferred and found out that they actually like to eat healthier since most of the time they end up eating fast food when on the road. So, I got salads and snadwiches from the local grocery store catering dept. When they left with my stuff, I gave them each $40 and $50 for the driver/head person.

The same crew that packed and moved me were the same crew that would unload. This was great because they remembered where they packed certain stuff. When they arrived, it was pouring rain. They were great about making sure that everything was kept dry and ended up deciding not to unload the truck until the next day when the rain was due to stop. Once again, they were wonderful. I bought lunch for them both days and got Starbucks on the second day. At the end, I tipped them $40 each and $50 for the driver/head person.

It is my understanding that the head person/driver works with this same crew of people because he told me that he preferred it that way since he knows them already and trusts their work. So, if you are moving in TX, OK, LA anytime soon, I would go with Allied and request this group of guys. As I said, they were wonderful. They even made sure that a half eaten sleeve of saltine crackers was perfectly wrapped so that not one was broken....I kid you not.

Ours was also Allied and unfortunately we had different crews at each end, the loading crew was great but the unloading was not so much. We were told the unloading crew was the drivers responsibility which seemed really ridiculous since it was a 3/4 country love and he was based at our origin. I'm so glad you've had a good experience, I'm sure on shorter moves it is easier to employ your own crew as a driver.

I have never actually hired any company to move me, however, I'm completely considering it if we match a long distance from here. I don't want to have to drive across country if I don't have to - I'd much rather fly there and wait for my belongings to show up after me.

It can be pretty expensive for a full move, however having a crew load and unload a u-haul was roughly 300 on each end which was money very well spent. This was 4 years ago in the upper Midwest.
