Chewable Pepto-Bismol! If you have it, you won't need it. Can be very helpful to have if you are all of a sudden eating alot of fast food and on the road!!!! From the former Gastroenterology nurse!

Oh man, I seriously don't need to see another burger for a looooong time. Everyone says to try In-and-Out Burger, and I just can't get myself to do it after all the road trip crap we ate!

I agree - you must try them at least once while you're there Alison, maybe after the baby is born

I don't know if any of you have had luck with SpaceBags for packing, but DH is having a blast with them. (Yes, I put him to work on condensing the boxes by half) His solution - Space Bags - you know, vacuum-sealed bags?

Well he is bouncing around, coming to the computer every few minutes to show me how many boxes fit into one bag. *sigh* Boys with toys.

Anyway, seeing as he seems to be their new spokesperson (ha) I thought I would toss that bit of advice out. I'll let you know in a week if they make it for the whole journey.

They are great as long as they don't spring a leak. My husband thought they were great fun, too. It was all about how small he could get the down comforter.

For those of you who have recently moved - any new advice? We load the truck Wednesday and I'm really scared that I feel really under control. Assuming our movers actually show up, I have completed the 3 million or so phone calls I needed to make to disconnect services here, reconnect them there, made provisions for the kids and the dog for the day the packers are here and most of the time the movers are here, and seem to have my house organized. I must be missing something!!! Any last minute tips?

We just got back from a temporary move (four months) and my best advice would be to think very carefully about what you do and don't need to bring with you. Any clothes you haven't worn in years, cheap candles that can be easily replaced--things like that probably aren't worth packing up and moving since it just means more work for you and your husband.

                  Good luck with the move!

Kind of silly questions but I've never done a long-distance move before.

We have a company packing and moving for us. Do we have to disassemble desks etc. if we can or will they load them as they are? We don't have a lot of furniture.

When is the best time to cut off cable, electric, gas? We're renting now and I'm debating wheter to schedule it now or to wait until the week of the move.

They'll disassemble furniture if they need to. You don't need to do *anything* but tell them what to pack and load and what not to pack and load.

As for disconnecting stuff; I'd call the utilities as soon as I knew the exact date, just to get it out of the way and not have to worry about it later on. If we're talking months out, I'd probably make a list in evernote of exactly who needs to be called and what the numbers are, so a few weeks ahead I could just call them all at once.

LESSON LEARNED- when they disassemble your furniture, make sure that you know where they've put the pieces that put it all back together. and make sure that they don't put all of the screws and attaching things in the same bag. and that the bag makes it your new home.

In fact, when I tried to pre-pack some stuff (things I wanted together for sure, or felt were REALLY important personal items -- like my mom's writings -- that I wanted to know where they were, they told me they had to re-pack them so they'd be sure it was packed properly.

As to the re-assembly that Jenn mentioned -- make sure it's spelled out in the contract if THEY re-assemble. Mine did.

Maybe I should get a copy of the contract. Since it's DH's employer taking care of it, we're kind of out of the loop.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I will be watching them carefully.
