  • The term "Pimped" used by the medical field

Does anyone else's DH/FI/BF use this term? I find it hillarious. I have to hold myself back from laughing histerically everytime!

    pimp

    v. (by senior medical personnel) to badger a student doctor with medical questions (as a teaching method).

Ooh, I get this from my husband a lot and didn't realize it was medical. He also uses "plus/minus" all the time.

            A typical conversation:

Me: "How was rounds this morning?"
Him: "Well, the head attending came on really strong, and I was pimped, but it's cool. I was prepared."

            ...

            Ah, the joys of pimping

Ohhhhh, you want hear a truly obnoxious medical-language idiosyncrasy?

Radiologists from the generation before dh's residency class always pronounce centimeter as "SON-teh-meter". It sounds soooo pretentious. And, if you didn't say it that way in residency you were the odd person out! I am fairly certain dh does NOT use that pronunciation when he is dictating nowdays.

that's backwards. Pimping is the questioning that the attendings do to the residents / students. The practice of pimping is questioning a person to death -- essentially quizzing on the spot, usually in front of others so that if you don't know you'll be embarrassed. If he did that to his senior, it would not be received well.

I was thinking the same thing. If he does that he will be pimped into the ground for the next several weeks.

Oh, GIVE ME A BREAK! Are you kidding?

And LilySaysWhat...WHOA. That is just...gross. Of course then, I announced to my Judge that the Supreme Court "spanked" the lower court judge panel, in a recent decision. And he didn't even blink an eye.

Neurosurgeons always find a sexual way of describing EVERYTHING. The more effectively you can work a derogatory homosexuality/bestiality/sacreligious reference into any adjective phrase that includes the word "f**k," the better. A lot of sexual phrases referring to who is dominating who. When they are being classier, they describe someone as a "tool" (that, apparently, is bad). And they love to insult each other by questioning the other's masculinity, sexuality, or even actual anatomy. Charming.

DH must look like a real oddball. If he gets REALLY mad, he might say, "Damn." But he mentally catalogues the most creative obscenities to share for a laugh at home.

I asked DrK about "pimping" tonight. He reluctantly admitted that it is part of the slang used in his hospital.

I was just about to post that DH has never used the word pimping (assuming that they must not use it at his school) and then I just asked him if they use the term.... his response: "All the time."

Ha ha - I do find that funny - it is so odd, I wonder how it got started?
