Yup, we're just a bunch of hillbillies.

Moxie doesn't get into restaurants. She will sometimes come with if we are dining outdoors. She went to law school classes with me (she was really tiny then, about 2lbs), has been to my office numerous times, and has definitely accompanied me to retail shops and beauty salons. Her favorite place in the whole world is Target. Nothing makes her happier than riding around in the cart while all that stuff piles in.

As she's getting older and we've moved to a cooler climate, she doesn't get out as much. I think she misses it.

BTW, Alison, I'm totally not offended. I get it. I guess I just make exceptions for my dog and my husband.

I wasn't picturing hillbillies, MrsK! I was picturing fur coats and little dogs on gilded chains with diamond studded collars. Remember, my DH would be right there with you in the scrubs....but our dogs would probably eat the waiter. They tend towards gigantic.

Moxie does have a pink harness and leash with rhinestones. I promised her I'd get it for her if she made it through the famous Lysol poisoning of 2005. Actually, the one I promised her was the beautiful one in the dog groomer's window that was all rhinestones . . . then I saw the price. Yikes! I think she likes her pink one just the same. She wears a ribbon in her hair too. DrK, who is roughly the size of a grizzly bear, looks *really* macho when he's taking her out for a walk. . . in his scrubs, of course.

Oh, Luanne, I am SO with you on that!! I am NOT a germ-phobe at all. (We completely freak out our super-sterile friends whose kids have never touched a toy that hasn't been Lysoled.) But, the other day, DD crawled into the hall, found DH's hospital shoe and stuck it in her mouth and began to chew. I dive-bombed on her, and snatched up the shoe. I can't imagine what antigen-presentation occurred with that experience...

I'm so jealous of these hospitals that do laundry!
I wash DH's separately because they are the only things I wash hot, not because of germs. He doesn't wear them anywhere except the car to and from work because he feels conspicuous in them, but there are people in scrubs around here all the time.
We are not germophobes. If his Crocs get blood on he washes them but apart from that, we don't hide them from DS.

I think I'm the complete opposite of a germ-a-phobe. Scrubs get washed with everything else -- even when the 2 year old was an infant. 2 year old regularly wears daddy's Crocs or sneakers around the house (those are what hubby wears to the hospital). And scrubs are worn anywhere and everywhere.

I know this isn't quite the same thing - but there is a daytime show called "Doctors" (I think) and the ER doc wears nothing but his scrubs on the show. I know it is for appearance, but I've always felt he should wear a lab coat, or a suit, or something more professional when giving medical advice.

Sorry, this forum made me think of it. When I see someone eating in a restaurant, I just assume the scrubs are clean and if they aren't then that is on the person wearing them and their own risk assessment. I've never been too bothered by it, but maybe it is because I come from the lab and have a very good sense of sterile-nonsterile or clean-unclean.

*shrug* I think it is just a good thing when scrub-wearers get to go out to eat, or get to walk home!!

I'm sure the Emergency doc on "The Doctors" wears scrubs, not for appearance but because he worked to get where he is for the privilege of wearing PJs to work everyday (at least that's what DH would tell you). Most of our friends who practice in the ED are VERY casual outside of work.

That's a great reason! I'll hand it to him, he certainly did earn it!

DH wears scrubs all day, every day. He changes scrubs at the hospital before/after OR cases and after deliveries if he gets anything on himself. He wears shoe covers in the OR and during deliveries. He wears his white coat in the office. He has been seen in scrubs all over town and at the kids' school events, although he changes if he has time, and wouldn't go to a sit down restaurant in scrubs. There are scrubs in the laundry every week and since he leaves the gunky ones at the hospital, it has never bothered me. DH is a pretty casual guy and would HATE dressing up every day.

I think the woman was upset that dh might be bringing disease from the hospital out into public. She definitely disturbed me with her behavior.

dh's hospital does wash scrubs but the machines don't always work, often they are out of his size and he doesn't have a place to change other than the gen surgery office that is full of people milling about. residents last! he's figured out how to trick the machine so he just brings them home and I wash them seperately on hot and he periodically changes out the ones that have gotten ratty. For procedures he's gowned & they wear layers of coverage in the or. So the only worry could be spors & microbes that he's come into contact with from sickies and there is really no way to gauge that since you can't see them. Ahhhh paranoia!

All I can say is that I'm glad DrK won't be dealing with a lot of fluids or infectious diseases in psych.

Oh, good grief!! DH wears his scrubs in public all the time, and he's never had anyone react that way to him. We've got a dozen hospitals here and hundreds of medical centers and clinics....people in scrubs are EVERYWHERE.
