  • Downloadable audiobooks

Do any of you buy them? What are some good sites?

I was surprised by how expensive audible.com seemed to be ($20-$25 a book), but maybe that's normal?

I know you can get them from the library - this would be for a gift.

I used Audible for awhile a few years ago. I don't remember the prices then, but I remember that if you subscribed, the books were significantly cheaper. I think I had a subscription where I got two books a month.

I searched for this thread b/c I'm heading out on a roadtrip tomorrow. FYI - audible.com is offering $7.49/mo for 3 months (cancel at anytime), and ebates gives $5 back when you sign up. So I'm downloading Ken Follet's World Without End (unabridged!) for $2.50.

Mind you, this would only be feasible to listen to in a month's time if you're actually undertaking the insane drive that I am ... but, hey .. bright side, right?

        Re: Downloadable audiobooks

My local library is offering audiobooks and ebooks!! I haven't check out the selection yet, but it advertises downloading them to an iPod or burn to a CD.

I have both Stanza and Kindle apps on my iPhone. So far, I prefer Stanza, but that could be because I've used it longer and am more familiar with it.

I check out audio books online through the library. I transfer them onto my IPod, but they also give you options to burn them to CDs and put them on other MP3s. The selection is pretty decent. Sometimes I have to put something on hold and wait until its available, just like any book. Right now I have Pride and Prejudice on hold.

I love that book! Enjoy! That was my main problem with Audible - I didn't have enough time to listen to the books I got. (I think my subscription included two books a month.)

But with Audible you just need to remember to download the books (or put them on your "next download" list) each month. You can keep the files forever - so you don't need to finish one before getting the next. We have been audible members forever. Got it as a gift from my dad about five years ago. We get a book a month. My son is an audio book junkie, so it works out. I think I have several books saved that I haven't listened to though -- so I'm ready for a car trip. I could also burn the files and give them away.

I put them on my IPod, then I turn the volume almost all the way up and put the little earphones under my pillow. I set the sleep timer for 30 minutes and listen to it every night as I fall asleep. Sometimes I make it through the full 30 minutes, other times not, but it gets me through the books. If I don't turn it all the way up, its quiet enough that it doesn't bother J. On nights he is on call I don't have to worry about the volume at all or I put it in my IPod player and don't have to have it under my pillow. I like having someone read to me as I fall asleep.

L.Jane -- that's what both my kids do now at night. They best find spouses with the same habit when they are all grown up, huh?

I am subscribed to a service through the public library, and also one book/month through Audible. Love them for long drives. If I'm tired though, audio books can put me to sleep!

Wow - if that is the case, then they basically let you buy 1 book/month at a really reduced rate! Good thing, too, b/c even after driving back and forth to Ohio, I'm still only at the beginning of the 3rd part of a 6 part download!

The credits you pay for, with Audible, don't expire. Sometimes, I'll let them build up for a while, then we are going on a long trip, the kids pick some, and DH and pick some to listen to. My daughter loves to listen to books as she's going to sleep.
