    Hostess Gift

    Sorry, I didn't know where to post this so I picked this forum ...

    DH and I have been invited to a dinner at one of his department's senior resident's homes next weekend, and I have been racking my brain trying to think of a nice hostess gift that isn't too "overdone" (i.e., bottle of wine, flowers). Does anyone have any ideas or a favorite gift that they like to give? I'm looking for something that's unique but not too pricey.

    Do you have a Williams Sonoma near you? They have neat gift ideas, teas, coffees, relishes, etc. If they drink wine a bottle in a pretty gift bag is always nice. Have fun.

      If they don't drink wine, how about a decorative tin of tea bags or a pound of gourmet coffee?

        I like to give flowers because they are generally well received. Also, I like to receive flowers since they stay around for only a few days which helps reduce clutter in the house. A bottle of wine is nice too -- that only stays around for a few days as well!

          If they don't drink tea, coffee, or wine (like us) then nice chocolates make a great hostess gift (the flowers someone else suggested are also a wonderful idea - and you avoid dietary restrictions with that gift). We had a resident get-together at our house a few months ago and, despite my husband's note in his email regarding our non-alcohol household someone still brought us some! It was a difficult situation indeed! The best hostess gift was from a resident who brought a pretty bouquet of flowers.

          (We ran into a similar issue last year when, at the banquet at the end of my husband's transitional intern year, he and the other residents were given bottles of wine. Unfortunately many in the world don't take into consideration that many people don't drink alcohol).

            We were invited to a function on post at one of the colonel's homes and I bought a really pretty candle and put in in a gift bag- it seemed to go over well.
