Anyone have any suggestions for dealing with what easily is about 35-40 mosquito bites? Yeah, I can assure you that I'm never going to Rockport, TX again. It was awful- and I got these bites despite being covered in OFF. They bit through my clothes. I have them everywhere- the worst ones are the ones on my elbows, the back of my neck and the backs of my knees.

So, other than benedryl which makes me have tunnel vision the next day, any suggestions?

I've heard of people using vinegar to calm the itching? I tried it a couple of times on DS#1 (he gets bad reactions to bug bites), it didn't seem to make a huge difference on him but maybe it will help you...

I usually use hydrocortizone cream for mosquito bites. It does help.

What about trying another anti-histimine? Claritin or Zyrtec. I keep the generic clortrimiton on hand for DS because it doesn't make him as drowsy, and it's cheap, 100 pills for about 4 bucks.

Oh, no, I'm so sorry! From one mosquito magnet to another - OFF does not help. DH says he doesn't even need bug spray when I'm around because they all just munch on me.

Have you tried the Benedryl cream, or does that also have side-effects for you? That stuff works miracles on my bites. My mom used to use A&D ointment on our bug bites when we were little. It didn't help as much with the itching, but I think it's supposed to make them heal faster. (?)

I swear by topical benadryl, calamine lotion, and Aveeno makes a good anti-itch calamine-like lotion.

On a side note - I find Avon's Skin-So-Soft body oil to be a much better mosquito repellent than OFF. (I am not particular to the smell, but it is much better for you than the ingredients in OFF). Sometimes I put the Avon S-S-S all over me and then put OFF on my clothing.

                  (I too am a mosquito-magnet...ugh)

On one evening early each summer, it is customary for members of the Samí people (indigenous population of northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia) to strip down naked at a location that's particularly mosquito-infested and allow the mosquitos to sting them as much as they want. The shock exposure to the poison is supposed to make them immune for the duration of the summer.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it must suck to be Samí.

                      Poor Jenn.

My suggestion is similar to others: topical Benadryl (if you don't have a reaction to that). They make something called an Itch Stick, which allows you to press the topical solution directly onto the bite. And it's non-messy, transportable (temporary) relief. I've had to keep pressing the stuff on sometimes because the bites are THAT bad.

It's amazing how mosquitos are attracted to some people and not to others. DF and I went to a family BBQ on Sunday. We sat outside for the same amount of time (1/2 hour) and we were both wearing shorts. Results? DF: no bites. Me: six bites, all behind my left knee. There was an interesting WSJ article the other day about a British study that is trying to figure out why some people attract more mosquitos than others.

Haha - the first line of the article says, "If you're one of those people whom mosquitoes tend to favor, maybe it's because you aren't sufficiently stressed-out." Guess that's why they pick me over DH!

McPants, that sounds awful! So glad I'm not part of their tribe. I probably would never come back from a trip like that...

I am a mosquito magnet. I get welts the size of softballs. I have been using the OFF smooth and dry. I like it because I don't feel sticky afterward, but I am going to try Avon next year!! I have tried a few Avon products (glowing lotion) and I loved it!

The avon stuff works. I really liked the combination bug stuff/sun screen. I don't know if they still make it but it was good stuff.

I'm not sure that it was me in particular or just the sheer number of them. I have honestly never seen swarms of mosquitoes before. I mean black clouds of mosquitoes coming out of the grass.

I went with the glass of red wine and topical itch stuff treatment.
